Background: Honokiol (HNK), a natural phenolic compound derived from Magnolia plants, exhibits therapeutic effects on various diseases, including cancer. The advent of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has marked a breakthrough in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment. However, a significant subset of patients exhibits primary or acquired resistance to anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapies, necessitating the development of novel combination strategies to enhance therapeutic efficacy and overcome resistance.

The present study aimed to improve the dose distribution of radiotherapy planning for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) by comparing the effects of various minimum monitor units (MUs) per dynamic control point (MMCP) values on the quality and execution efficiency of dynamic intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) planning. Thirty-four clinically implemented dynamic IMRT plans for patients with NPC were retrospectively selected. In total, 170 plans were obtained by modifying only the MMCP values (set as 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9) in the treatment planning system's (TPS) optimization parameters.

Article Synopsis
  • Breast cancer (BC), particularly triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), lacks effective therapeutic options, leading researchers to explore the properties of Honokiol (HNK), a compound derived from a specific plant.
  • The study found that HNK can inhibit BC cell growth and promote cell death in a dose-dependent way, especially in MDA-MB-231 cells, by activating certain apoptotic pathways.
  • Investigations revealed that HNK treatment increased levels of miR-148a-5p (linked to better patient prognosis) while decreasing CYP1B1, and combining HNK with paclitaxel showed strong potential for enhancing treatment efficacy.

Magnetic tunneling junctions (MTJs) lie in the core of magnetic random access memory, holding promise in integrating memory and computing to reduce hardware complexity, transition latency, and power consumption. However, traditional MTJs are insensitive to light, limiting their functionality in in-memory sensing─a crucial component for machine vision systems in artificial intelligence applications. Herein, the convergence of magnetic memory with optical sensing capabilities is achieved in the all-two-dimensional (2D) magnetic junction FeGaTe/WSe/FeGaTe, which combines 2D magnetism and optoelectronic properties.

Glioblastoma (GBM) represents a prevalent form of primary malignant tumours in the central nervous system, but the options for effective treatment are extremely limited. Ferroptosis, as the most enriched programmed cell death process in glioma, makes a critical difference in glioma progression. Consequently, inducing ferroptosis has become an appealing strategy for tackling gliomas.

  • Singapore grouper iridovirus (SGIV) is a dangerous virus that causes many grouper fish to die, hurting the fishing industry.
  • Researchers are testing a medicine called edaravone to see if it can help fight SGIV.
  • The study found that edaravone can stop SGIV from harming cells but doesn't work after the virus has already entered the cells, making it important for controlling grouper viruses.

Sugars are renewable resources essential to human life, but they are rarely used as raw materials for the industrial production of carbon-based materials, especially for the preparation of carbon fiber-reinforced carbon-matrix (C/C) composites, which are extremely useful for the semiconductor and aerospace sectors. Herein, a method utilizing sugar-derived carbon to replace petrochemicals as dense matrix to preparing C/C composites is reported. The matrix from sugar-derived C/C (S-C/C) composites has a nanocrystalline graphite structure that is highly thermally stable and effectively bonded to the carbon fibers.

Background: Radiomics has been applied for assessing lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in patients with breast cancer. However, associations between features from peritumoral regions and the LVI status were not investigated.

Purpose: To investigate the value of intra- and peritumoral radiomics for assessing LVI, and to develop a nomogram to assist in making treatment decisions.

Introduction: The bacterium is a multispecies pathogen associated with meningitis-like disease that has been isolated from several amphibian species, including the bullfrog, but this is the first isolation in Guangxi. In the present study, the dominant bacteria were isolated from the brains of five bullfrogs with meningitis-like disease on a South China farm in Guangxi.

Methods: The NFEM01 isolate was identified by Gram staining; morphological observations; , and -based phylogenetic tree analysis; and physiochemical characterization and was subjected to drug sensitivity and artificial infection testing.

Introduction: Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a diffuse cerebral dysfunction resulting from a systemic inflammatory response to infection; however, its pathophysiology remains unclear. Sepsis-induced neuroinflammation and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption are crucial factors in brain function disturbance in SAE. Mast cells (MCs) activation plays an important role in several neuroinflammation models; however, its role in SAE has not been comprehensively investigated.

(1) Background: Largemouth bass virus (LMBV) is a major viral pathogen in largemouth bass () aquaculture that often causes high mortality and heavy economic losses, thus developing treatments to combat this pathogen is of great commercial importance. Green tea is a well-known medicinal plant that contains active ingredients with antiviral, antibacterial, and other biological activities. The goals of this study were to explore the effect and mechanism of green tea source compounds on LMBV and provide data to serve as the basis for the screening of targeted drugs in the future.

Article Synopsis
  • Large plastic deformation in polycrystalline van der Waals (vdW) materials, like graphite, is tough due to their anisotropic nature.
  • The introduction of sugar-derived isotropic nanostructured polycrystalline graphite (SINPG) allows for better plasticity through the rotation of small nanoscale grains.
  • SINPG exhibits impressive compressive strengths up to 3.0 GPa and plastic strains of 30-50%, indicating potential applications in various fields, including semiconductors and aerospace.

Ikaros is a zinc finger transcription factor (TF) of the Krüppel family member, which significantly regulates normal lymphopoiesis and tumorigenesis. Ikaros can directly initiate or suppress tumor suppressors or oncogenes, consequently regulating the survival and proliferation of cancer cells. Over recent decades, a series of studies have been devoted to exploring and clarifying the relationship between Ikaros and associated tumors.
