To address the unmet need for a widely available examination for mortality prediction, this study developed a foundation visual artificial intelligence (VAI) to enhance mortality risk stratification using chest X-rays (CXRs). The VAI employed deep learning to extract CXR features and a Cox proportional hazard model to generate a hazard score ("CXR-risk"). We retrospectively collected CXRs from patients visited outpatient department and physical examination center.

Recent studies have suggested that the combined injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and hyaluronic acid (HA) may have additive benefits for knee osteoarthritis over PRP alone, but there is insufficient evidence to support this combined injection. Moreover, the simultaneous injection of PRP and HA may offset the combined effect. Hence, the aim of this prospective, randomized, double-blind study was to assess their combined efficacy with a novel injection protocol.

Article Synopsis
  • Foreign body (FB) ingestion is a common issue that can be hard to diagnose in the upper digestive tract, often using conventional X-rays as the first imaging tool.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of 17 studies (involving 4,809 patients) evaluated the effectiveness of X-rays in spotting these FBs, revealing a pooled sensitivity of 0.58 (indicating many FBs may go undetected) and a specificity of 0.94 (suggesting if X-rays are negative, there’s a high chance FBs aren’t present).
  • The study concludes that due to the low sensitivity of X-rays, they shouldn't be relied upon to rule out FBs in at-risk patients, and suggests further imaging

Article Synopsis
  • Scaphoid fractures are the most frequently occurring wrist fractures, but their diagnosis can be tricky, prompting interest in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a potential diagnostic tool.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate CBCT's effectiveness in diagnosing these fractures, incorporating data from five databases until March 2020.
  • The analysis found that CBCT demonstrated high sensitivity (0.88) and specificity (0.99), indicating it is an excellent diagnostic method; however, the evidence quality is low and more extensive studies are needed for confirmation.

Objectives: The goal of this study was to investigate the role of the ground-glass opacity (GGO) ratio in lung adenocarcinoma in predicting surgical outcomes.

Methods: Patients who underwent surgical resection for pulmonary adenocarcinoma between January 2004 and December 2013 were reviewed. The clinical data, imaging characteristics of nodules, surgical approaches and outcomes were analysed with a mean follow-up of 87 months.

Objective: No studies comparing the effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection and placebo injection in bilateral knee osteoarthritis in the same patient, or discussing muscle strength after PRP injection, have been published.

Design: Twenty patients with bilateral knee osteoarthritis were eligible, and 40 knees were randomized into two groups: PRP (knees [right or left by a coin toss] receiving a single intra-articular PRP injection) and saline group (the contralateral knee of the same patient, into which single 4-mL intra-articular injection of normal saline was administered). The primary outcome measure was Western Ontario and McMaster's Universities Osteoarthritis Index and the secondary included isokinetic test results.

Cysts and cavities are common radiologic abnormalities. Pulmonary metastasis comprises a rare entity of thoracic cystic diseases. We reported a case of giant cyst at the left anterior mediastinum that was pathologically confirmed as a lung metastasis from previously resected gastric cancer.

Management of empyema with bronchopleural fistula remains a challenge. A 38-year-old man who had bullous emphysema was hospitalized on account of a right-sided necrotizing pneumonia complicated by empyema that mandated a tube drainage. Persistent air leak from the chest tube was noted, and chest computed tomography confirmed an empyema cavity with a suspicious bronchopleural fistula.

We report an unusual case of tibial osteomyelitis resulting from Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccination and causing subsequent cortical destruction and a subcutaneous abscess. A 10-month-old infant initially presented with a tender palpable mass below the left knee. Radiographs showed an osteolytic lesion in the proximal metaphysis of the tibia.
