Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to enhance mortality prediction in critically ill ICU patients by combining levels of the amino acids phenylalanine and leucine.
  • Researchers found that specific thresholds of these amino acids were linked to higher mortality rates, leading to the creation of new PLA scores that classify patients into risk categories.
  • The PLA scores outperformed traditional risk assessments like APACHE II and NUTRIC scores and suggest a potential for future research on using these scores to tailor nutritional interventions for better patient outcomes.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a radiation-free and noninvasive medical image reconstruction technique in which a current is injected and the reflected voltage is received through electrodes. EIT electrodes require good connection with the skin for data acquisition and image reconstruction. However, detached electrodes are a common occurrence and cause measurement errors in EIT clinical applications.

Amelogenins, the principal proteins in the developing enamel microenvironment, self-assemble into supramolecular structures to govern the remodeling of a proteinaceous organic matrix into longitudinally ordered hydroxyapatite nanocrystal arrays. Extensive in vitro studies using purified native or recombinant proteins have revealed the potential of N-terminal amelogenin on protein self-assembly and its ability to guide the mineral deposition. We have previously identified a 14-aa domain (P2) of N-terminal amelogenin that can self-assemble into amyloid-like fibrils in vitro.
