Individuals with a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) often have executive control deficits; however, the underlying neural mechanisms of such deficits are yet to be clarified. Inhibitory control and cognitive monitoring are two fundamental aspects of executive control processes. This study investigated the executive control of mTBI by using the Stop-signal task.

A Multidisciplinary Program Reduces Over 24 Hours of Physical Restraint in Neurological Intensive Care Unit.

Background: Physical restraint (PR) has to be performed in a well-organized, structured, and careful manner. The safety and effectiveness of the PR procedure in clinical practice are crucial to patient care.

Purposes: The aim of this study was to examine the effect in neurological intensive care units of a multidisciplinary PR reduction program on the overall incidence rate of PR, the monthly rate of PR, and the monthly rate of PR of more than and less than 24 hours, respectively, after controlling for associated factors.

Tropical pyomyositis of erector spinae complicated with spinal epidural abscess.

Study Design: This is a retrospective case series.

Objective: Tropical pyomyositis of erector spinae muscle (ESPM) is a rare muscular infection which may extend into the intraspinal canal to become spinal epidural abscess (ESPM-SEA). If left untreated, it may cause catatrophic spinal cord dysfunction and lead to irreversible paralysis.

Adult supratentorial extra-pineal primitive neuro-ectodermal tumors.

Primitive neuro-ectodermal tumors (PNET) are rare malignant brain tumors, mostly undifferentiated, that tend to spread through the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Extra-pineal supratentorial PNET in adults are very rare. Published guidelines for adult PNET were not available until 2011, and at our institute surgeons and oncologists did not have consensus on imaging evaluation or treatment protocols between 1994 to 2008.

Transarterial embolization for intractable oronasal hemorrhage associated with craniofacial trauma: evaluation of prognostic factors.

Background: This study analyzed the outcomes for clinical application of transarterial embolization (TAE) to treat intractable posttraumatic oronasal hemorrhage in patients who suffered from craniofacial injuries.

Methods: The charts and radiologic and operative records of 34 patients from January 2002 to December 2007 were retrospectively reviewed. Inclusion criteria focused on the patients whose intractable posttraumatic oronasal hemorrhage associated with craniofacial trauma required TAE treatment.

Transarterial embolisation for intractable post-traumatic oronasal haemorrhage following traumatic brain injury: evaluation of prognostic factors.

Aim: To analyse the outcomes of transarterial embolisation (TAE) for post-traumatic oronasal haemorrhage following traumatic brain injury (TBI), for clinical application and prognosis.

Method: Retrospective review of records of 17 patients treated in the neurosurgical intensive care unit for TBI complicated with intractable post-traumatic oronasal haemorrhage requiring TAE. The Mann-Whitney U-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test and Fisher's exact test were used in statistical analysis.

Surgical treatment for severe visual compromised patients after pituitary apoplexy.

Background: Pituitary apoplexy is a rare neurovascular insult. Early surgical decompression is the most effective treatment, especially for rapid deterioration of visual acuity or for altered consciousness. The timing of rapidly expanded mass was strongly related to the treatment outcome.

Thoracic ossified meningioma and osteoporotic burst fracture: treatment with combined vertebroplasty and laminectomy without instrumentation: case report.

Although spinal meningioma is a common benign neoplasm, the ossified variant is rare. No more than 20 sporadic cases were reported in the literature between 1977 and January 2005. Recently, the authors treated a patient with a symptomatic ossified meningioma located in the posterior aspect of T-11 and an associated osteoporotic T-11 burst fracture.

Spinal cord injury without radiological abnormality in preschool-aged children: correlation of magnetic resonance imaging findings with neurological outcomes.

Object: Spinal cord injury without radiological abnormality (SCIWORA) was defined in the era when magnetic resonance (MR) images were not popularly used as diagnostic tools. Although it is generally accepted that MR imaging can effectively illustrate the level and severity of spinal cord injury in the acute phase of trauma, only a few reports of MR imaging studies of SCIWORA have been published. The authors retrospectively reviewed nine preschool-aged patients with SCIWORA to study the correlation between MR imaging findings and the outcomes of neurological deficits, with an elimination of the bias for age.
