Introduction: In the biological sciences, many areas of uncertainty exist regarding the factors that contribute to success within the faculty job market. Earlier work from our group reported that beyond certain thresholds, academic and career metrics like the number of publications, fellowships or career transition awards, and years of experience did not separate applicants who received job offers from those who did not. Questions still exist regarding how academic and professional achievements influence job offers and if candidate demographics differentially influence outcomes.

. Approximately 57% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients face a 20% risk of brain metastases (BMs). The delivery of drugs to the central nervous system is challenging because of the blood-brain barrier, leading to a relatively poor prognosis for patients with BMs.

Cavernous hemangioma of mediastinum is a rare, benign tumor originating from vascular endothelial cells. It typically arises in the anterior mediastinum but has also been reported in the posterior mediastinum or the middle mediastinum, and occasionally involves both the anterior and middle compartments. We present the case of a 20-year-old man with a cavernous hemangioma of mediastinum initially misdiagnosed as a reproductive tumor by 18 F-FDG PET/CT.

Microscopic inspection of thin-film blood smears is widely used to identify red blood cell (RBC) pathologies, including malaria parasitism and hemoglobinopathies, such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia. Emerging research indicates that non-pathologic changes in RBCs can also be detected in images, such as deformability and morphological changes resulting from the storage lesion. In transfusion medicine, cell deformability is a potential biomarker for the quality of donated RBCs.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), and cell death plays an important role. Ferroptosis is a recently discovered type of iron-dependent cell death and one that is different from other kinds of cell death including apoptosis and necrosis. However, ferroptosis has not been described in the context of DN.

We often assume that travel direction is redundant with head direction, but from first principles, these two factors provide differing spatial information. Although head direction has been found to be a fundamental component of human navigation, it is unclear how self-motion signals for travel direction contribute to forming a travel trajectory. Employing a novel motion adaptation paradigm from visual neuroscience designed to preclude a contribution of head direction, we found high-level aftereffects of perceived travel direction, indicating that travel direction is a fundamental component of human navigation.

Whipple disease is a rare disorder caused by infection with the gram-positive bacterium Tropheryma whipplei . It can invade various organs and systems of the whole body. This case report describes a patient with invasion of multiple lymph nodes throughout the body misdiagnosed as lymphoma by PET/CT.

Expanding bilateral sphenoid sinus plasty is an essential technique for the treatment of sphenoid sinus diseases, such as refractory sphenoid sinusitis, sphenoid sinus cyst, fungal sphenoid sinusitis, sphenoid sinus carcinoma and sphenoid sinus chordoma. The present study evaluated the potential application of expanding bilateral sphenoid sinus plasty in the treatment of sphenoid sinus diseases. A retrospective medical record review of 42 patients treated with the expanding bilateral sphenoid sinus plasty from December 2012 to December 2018 was performed in a tertiary-care university hospital.

Objectives: To assess the value of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in the efficacy evaluation of patients undergoing neoadjuvant immunotherapy plus chemotherapy, and to analyze its correlation with postoperative pathology.

Methods: The PET/CT metabolic parameters and CT size were retrospectively analyzed before and after neoadjuvant immunotherapy plus chemotherapy in 67 patients with resectable stage II/IIIA non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). CT assessment based on immune response evaluation criteria in solid tumor criteria ((i)RECIST) was compared with PET/CT assessment based on the response criteria in solid tumors (PERCIST).

The rapid changes in clinical maternity situations that occur in a labor and delivery unit can lead to unpredictable maternal and newborn morbidities. Cesarean section (CS) rate is a key indicator of the accessibility and quality of a labor and delivery unit. This retrospective cross-sectional study assesses the nulliparous, term, singleton, vertex (NTSV) cesarean delivery rates before and after the implementation of a smart intrapartum surveillance system.

Primary cardiac chondrosarcoma invading the right pulmonary vein is very rare, whereas secondary cardiac chondrosarcoma is relatively common. We reported the 18 F-FDG PET/CT findings of primary cardiac chondrosarcoma and pulmonary inflammation misdiagnosed as cardiac malignancy and pulmonary metastasis in a 27-year-old man.

Every year, millions of brain MRI scans are acquired in hospitals, which is a figure considerably larger than the size of any research dataset. Therefore, the ability to analyze such scans could transform neuroimaging research. Yet, their potential remains untapped since no automated algorithm is robust enough to cope with the high variability in clinical acquisitions (MR contrasts, resolutions, orientations, artifacts, and subject populations).

Penicilliosis marneffei is an extremely rare fungal infectious disease and is especially rare in people with normal immunity. Penicilliosis marneffei restricted to the lung and involving the formation of a pulmonary tumor is difficult to distinguish from peripheral lung cancer. This kind of case has rarely been reported.

Backgrounds: Excessive pepsin can damage both normal laryngeal epithelial cells and laryngeal cancer (LC) cells. Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) is closely related to pepsin. In this paper, we will explore the different significance of the regulatory role of HSP70 in endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) level in pepsin-treated laryngeal epithelial cells and LC cells.

Piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) show superiority in self-powered energy converters and wearable electronics. However, the low power output and ineffective transformation of mechanical energy into electric energy l limit the role of PENGs in energy conversion and storage devices, especially in fiber-based wearable electronics. Here, a PAN-PVDF/ZnO PENG with a hierarchical structure was designed through electrospinning and a hydrothermal reaction.

Background: Trace metals have side-effect on human health. The association between trace metals exposure and hearing loss remains unclear.

Methods: A total of 8,128 participants were exacted for analysis of association between trace metals and hearing loss from the database of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2013-2018).

Penicilliosis marneffei is an extremely rare fungal infectious disease that often occurs in hosts with immunodeficiency or immune dysfunction. Penicilliosis marneffei has been seldom reported in children with multiple infiltrations throughout the body. We report a case of a boy with normal immune function who had multiple infiltrations of penicilliosis marneffei and was misdiagnosed with lymphoma by PET/CT.

Objectives: This project aimed to construct an individualized PET/CT prognostic biomarker to accurately quantify the progression risk of patients with stage IIIC-IV epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after first-line first and second generation EGFR- tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) drug therapy and identify the first and second generation EGFR-TKI treatment-sensitive population.

Methods: A total of 250 patients with stage IIIC-IV EGFR-mutated NSCLC underwent first-line first and second generation EGFR-TKI drug therapy were included from two institutions (140 patients in training cohort; 60 patients in internal validation cohort, and 50 patients in external validation cohort). 1037 3D radiomics features were extracted to quantify the phenotypic characteristics of the tumor region in PET and CT images, respectively.
