Understanding fracture mechanics in rock-like materials under compression-shear condition is critical for predicting failure mechanisms in various engineering applications, such as mining and civil infrastructure. This study conducted uniaxial compression tests on cubic gypsum specimens of varying sizes (side lengths of 75 mm, 100 mm, 125 mm, and 150 mm) and crack inclination angles (ranging from 0° to 90°) to assess the size effect on fracture behavior. The effects of specimen size and crack inclination on fracture characteristics, including strength, failure mode, and crack initiation angle, were analyzed based on the maximum tangential stress (MTS) criterion and the generalized maximum tangential stress (GMTS) criterion, with relative critical size (α) and relative openness ().

Accurate measurement of the pretightening stress for bolts has great significance for improving the assembly quality and safety, especially in severe environments. In this study, AlN thin film transducers were deposited on GH4169 nickel base alloy bolts using the RF magnetron sputtering, enabling a systematic investigation into the correlation between structures and the intensity of ultrasonic echo signals. Previous studies have explored the use of engineered blinatumomab-secreting autologous αβ T cells for CD19-targeted cancer therapy. Optogenetics-based synthetic biology holds great promise as a cell-based therapy strategy for many clinical incurable diseases; however, precise control over genetic expression strength and timing through disease state-related closed-loop regulation remains a challenge due to the lack of reversible probes to indicate real-time metabolite fluctuations. Here, based on a novel mechanism of analyte-induced hydrophobicity regulation of energy acceptors confined in mesoporous silica, we developed a smart hydrogel platform comprising glucose reversible responsive upconversion nanoprobes and optogenetic engineered cells, in which the upconverted blue light strength was adaptively tuned through blood glucose levels to control optogenetic expressions for insulin secretion. The intelligent hydrogel system enabled convenient maintenance of glycemic homeostasis through simple near-infrared illuminations without any additional glucose concentration monitoring, which efficiently avoided genetic overexpression-induced hypoglycemia.

A high-frequency, piezoelectric thin-film sensor was successfully deposited on a nickel-based superalloy bolt by radio frequency magnetron sputtering to develop a smart, nickel-based superalloy bolt. Ultrasonic response characterization, high accuracy, and repeatability of ultrasonic measurement of axial preload in nickel-based superalloy smart bolts are reported here and were fully demonstrated. The axial preload in the nickel-based superalloy smart bolt was directly measured by the bi-wave method (TOF ratio between transverse and longitudinal-mode waves) without using the traditional integration of a longitudinal and shear transducer.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) has a high degree of plasticity and is characterized by a remarkable response to chemotherapy followed by the development of resistance. Here, we use a mouse SCLC model to show that intratumoral heterogeneity of SCLC is progressively established during SCLC tumorigenesis. YAP/TAZ and Notch are required for the generation of non-neuroendocrine (Non-NE) SCLC tumor cells, but not for the initiation of SCLC.

Molecular oxygen activated by visible light to generate radicals with high oxidation ability exhibits great potential in environmental remediation The efficacy of molecular oxygen activation mainly depends on the separation and migration efficiency of the photoinduced charge carriers. In this work, 2D/2D CdInS/g-CN heterojunctions with different weight ratios were successfully fabricated by a simple electrostatic self-assembled route. The optimized sample with a weight ratio of 5:2 between CdInS and g-CN showed the highest photocatalytic activity for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation, which also displayed good photostability.

Deformation monitoring is of importance to ensure the operation status of concrete-face rockfill dams (CFRD). This paper reported a novel fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) monitoring system for continuously monitoring face slab deformation of CFRD, which consisted of a permanent monitoring pipeline and a sensing vehicle. The monitoring pipeline was made of steel pipes and polyvinyl chloride polymer connectors, which was embedded in a slot of the crushing-type sidewall beneath the concrete face slab of CFRD, forming a permanent monitoring channel.
