Purpose: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) during allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) leads to an increased need for transfusions. We developed an algorithm for the management of AUB that incorporated leuprolide and oral contraceptive pills (OCPs). Our aim was to evaluate whether treatment according to this algorithm reduced the number of transfusions.

Prokaryotic maintenance respiration and associated metabolic activities constitute a considerable proportion of the total respiration of carbon to CO2 in the ocean's mixed layer. However, seasonal influences on prokaryotic maintenance activities in terms of morphological and metabolic adaptations at low (winter) and high productivity (summer) are still unclear. To address this, we examined the natural prokaryotic communities at the mesocosm scale to analyse the differences in their morphological features and gene expression at low and high maintenance respiration, experimentally manipulated with the specific growth rate.

Effect of Novel and Traditional Intracanal Medicaments on Biofilm Viability and Composition.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that a combination of D-amino acids (DAAs) and trans-cinnamaldehyde (TC) demonstrates superior antibiofilm activity to calcium hydroxide (CH) and untreated controls.

Methods: In this 3-part in vitro study, the concentration of DAAs (D-methionine, D-leucine, D-tyrosine, and D-tryptophan) that would significantly decrease Enterococcus faecalis and Actinomyces naeslundii biofilm biomass was first determined. Then, the effect of TC + selected DAAs on polymicrobial biofilms was characterized by quantifying the biomass and biofilm viability.

Introduction: The primary aims of the current nationwide study were to establish the lifetime and 12-month prevalence of consumption of illicit drugs and its correlates in the general population of Singapore.

Method: A representative sample of 6509 Singapore residents (Singapore citizens and permanent residents) aged between 15 and 65 years were randomly selected for participation. Questionnaires were administered to assess the consumption of illicit drugs and collect information on correlates.

Molecular Surrogate Subtypes of Ovarian and Peritoneal Low-grade Serous Carcinoma.

Low-grade serous carcinoma (LGSC) is an uncommon histotype of ovarian carcinoma, accounting for ~3% of cases. There is evidence that survival of peritoneal LGSC (pLGSC) is longer than that of ovarian LGSC (oLGSC). Key molecular alterations of LGSC have been established, including loss of CDKN2A and PR expression, MAPK pathway alterations, and loss of USP9X expression.

The molecular subtype classification of endometrial carcinomas has conceptually changed our approach to this disease. However, open questions remain about how to integrate certain histotype diagnoses with the molecular subtype. We report 2 cases with morphologic suspicion for endometrial carcinosarcoma, that still fell short of the essential criteria for diagnosing carcinosarcoma.

Evaluating Bacterial Spore Preparation Methods for Scanning Electron Microscopy.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) can reveal the ultrastructure of bacterial spores, including morphology, surface features, texture, spore damage, germination, and appendages. Understanding these features can provide a basis for adherence, how physical and environmental stressors affect spore viability, integrity, and functionality, as well as the distribution and function of surface appendages. However, the spore sample preparation method can significantly impact the SEM images' appearance, resolution, and overall quality.

Impact of Interfering Substances on the Bactericidal Efficacy of Different Commercially Available Hypochlorous Acid-Based Wound Irrigation Solutions Commonly Found in South-East Asia.

The high prevalence of chronic wounds is a growing concern. Recently, hypochlorous acid (HOCl)-based solutions were introduced as an alternative antimicrobial for wound cleansing. In this study, we assessed the in vitro bactericidal activities of seven commercially available wound irrigation products commonly found in South-East Asia.

Prediction of textural properties of 3D-printed food using response surface methodology.

3D printing has enabled modifying internal structures of the food affecting textural properties, but predicting desired texture remains challenging. To overcome this challenge, the use of response surface methodology (RSM) was demonstrated to develop empirical models relating 3D printing parameters to textural properties using aqueous inks containing cricket powders as a model system. Studies in vivo have demonstrated that the accumulation of D-amino acids (D-AAs) is associated with age-related diseases and increased immune activation. However, the underlying mechanism(s) of these observations are not well defined. The metabolism of D-AAs by D-amino oxidase (DAO) produces hydrogen peroxide (HO), a reactive oxygen species involved in several physiological processes including immune response, cell differentiation, and proliferation.

Reverse Micellar Dyeing of Cotton Fabric with Reactive Dye Using Biodegradable Non-Ionic Surfactant as Nanoscale Carrier: An Optimisation Study by One-Factor-at-One-Time Approach.

This study investigates the feasibility of using biodegradable secondary alcohol ethoxylate (SAE) non-ionic surfactant as a building block for the formation of reverse micelles, functioning as reactive dye carriers for the dyeing of cotton fabric in non-aqueous octane medium. Ten dyeing parameters were optimised, by a one-factor-at-a-time approach, namely: (i) effect of colour fixation agent; (ii) surfactant-to-water mole ratio; (iii) surfactant-to-co-surfactant mole ratio; (iv) volume of soda ash; (v) volume of dye; (vi) solvent-to-cotton ratio; (vii) dyeing temperature; (viii) dyeing time; (ix) fixation time; (x) soda-ash-to-cotton ratio. The colour properties, fastness properties and physical properties of SAE-dyed samples were experimentally compared with the conventional water-dyed samples.

3D printability and biochemical analysis of revalorized orange peel waste.

Orange peels are often discarded as food waste despite being a nutritious source of vitamins and antioxidants. These orange peel wastes (OPW) are produced in millions of tons globally every year; discarding them results in detrimental environmental and economical impacts. This paper discusses the application of 3D printing technology to effectively upcycle the OPW into edible, healthy snacks for consumption.

TP53 as a Diagnostic Aid in the Distinction of Ovarian Mucinous Borderline Tumors From Mucinous Carcinoma.

Ovarian mucinous borderline tumors (MBTs) are clinically managed as benign neoplasms while the management of ovarian mucinous carcinomas (MC) is dependent on tumor stage. Despite the standardization of sampling of ovarian mucinous neoplasms, limited interobserver reproducibility between MBT and MC persists. Based on our recent finding that abnormal TP53 expression is associated with unfavorable outcome in MBT, we hypothesized that TP53 status might improve the reproducible distinction of MBT from MC.
