A novel approach for the solvothermal liquefaction of corn starch (CS) was investigated, using ternary deep eutectic solvent (TDES) as both an acidic catalyst and a source of liquefaction reagent. Synergistic effects from multi-component TDES were observed, leading to milder reaction conditions (110 °C, 35 min) and improved product selectivity (relative content of polyhydroxy compounds up to 97.83 %).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the impact of aging on bladder cancer progression and the immune response, aiming to identify prognostic markers and potential immunotherapeutic targets related to aging-immune genes.
  • - Researchers analyzed publicly available data to find key aging-immune related genes (AIGs) in bladder cancer and developed a risk-prognosis model based on these genes, specifically highlighting NFKB1 and IL7 as significant indicators of prognosis and immune response.
  • - The findings revealed that certain AIGs correlate with the immune microenvironment and treatment responses, with specific clusters indicating varying risk levels; confirmation through patient samples showed underexpression of IL7 and NFKB1 in bladder cancer.

The Sea Carp Cyprinus acutidorsalis (Wang) is an endemic species limited to a few estuaries in China, uniquely adapted to long-term residence in brackish water environments. This species is endangered due to anthropogenic disturbances, and its life history and habitat use remain poorly understood. This study is the first to investigate the life history and habitat utilization of Sea Carp in the Wanquan Estuary, Hainan Province, China, using otolith microchemistry.

Various contaminants are present in aquatic environment and pose potential threats to pelagic and benthic organisms, calling for effective risk assessment. Traditional risk assessments based on target analysis are useful when the principal contaminants responsible for ecological risk are known; however, these approaches become challenging when dealing with chemical mixtures. In addition, the compositions of chemical mixtures often differ in regions with different levels of socioeconomic development, requiring risk assessment methods that are applicable under different pollution scenarios.

  • Bauxite residue, a waste from alumina extraction, is being explored for reuse, specifically in treating oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) and supplementing municipal wastewater treatment.
  • Activated bauxite residue (ABR) is created through a reduction roasting process, improving its ability to act as an adsorbent for removing harmful substances in wastewater.
  • ABR significantly reduced contaminants in both OSPW (like acid-extractable organics and estrogenicity) and municipal wastewater (including fecal coliform and total phosphorus), but higher dosages can increase cytotoxicity, indicating the need for further optimization before widespread use.

Interactive image segmentation extremely accelerates the generation of high-quality annotation image datasets, which are the pillars of the applications of deep learning. However, these methods suffer from the insignificance of interaction information and excessively high optimization costs, resulting in unexpected segmentation outcomes and increased computational burden. To address these issues, this paper focuses on interactive information mining from the network architecture and optimization procedure.

  • Cisplatin is an effective chemotherapy drug for solid tumors but can lead to kidney damage, particularly acute kidney injury (AKI), limiting its use.
  • The study explored the effects of GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes, which are linked to kidney health, by creating knockout mice to assess their role in cisplatin-induced AKI.
  • Results indicated that the absence of these genes worsened kidney dysfunction and increased oxidative stress, suggesting their protective role against nephrotoxicity from cisplatin, and highlighting the potential for genetic screening to optimize treatment dosages in cancer patients.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive interstitial lung disease characterized by sustained fibrotic lesions. Orally administered drugs usually fail to efficiently penetrate the interstitial tissue and reach the lesions, resulting in low treatment efficiency. Luteolin (Lut) is a natural flavonoid, active metabolites of which possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, and anti-apoptotic properties.

Poliovirus (PV) is on the brink of eradication due to global vaccination programs utilizing live-attenuated oral and inactivated polio vaccines. Recombinant PV virus-like particles (VLPs) are emerging as a safe next-generation vaccine candidate for the impending polio-free era. In this study, we investigate the production, antigenicity, thermostability, immunogenicity, and structures of VLPs derived from PV serotype 2 (PV2) wildtype strain and thermally stabilized mutant (wtVLP and sVLP, respectively).

  • Alternative splicing is linked to cancer, specifically highlighting its role in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), where certain spliceosome-related proteins are found to be highly expressed.
  • The study identified SNRPB2 as a key protein in TNBC that correlates with poor patient outcomes; its knockdown inhibits cell growth and violates cell cycle progression by affecting E2F1 signaling.
  • Additionally, SNRPB2 knockdown alters splicing events, notably leads to the creation of the MDM4-S transcript, which reduces MDM4 protein levels and ultimately affects retinoblastoma 1 (Rb1) expression, revealing a new pathway (SNRPB2/MDM4/Rb) that may be targeted for

The fuel carried by deep space exploration spacecraft is crucial for the completion of their exploration missions, and the fuel for attitude control engines is even more precious. In order to reduce the control requirements for attitude control systems, this paper proposes a shape-based trajectory optimization algorithm that considers attitude constraints for low-thrust spacecraft. This method obtains a more accurate transfer trajectory by considering the change rate and change range constraints of the propulsion acceleration direction of spacecraft.

Given their relatively low persistence and mammalian toxicity, neonicotinoid pesticides have been extensively used worldwide and are omnipresent in the environment. Recent studies have shown that neonicotinoids may pose adverse effects on non-target organisms other than the known neurotoxicity, raising emerging concerns that these insecticides might pose human health risk through additional toxicity pathways. In the present study, the mitochondria function, oxidative stress, DNA damages, and genes transcription levels were examined in the human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells after 48-h exposure to imidacloprid at concentrations from 0.
