To determine the frequency of biochemical vitamin E deficiency and of the clinical signs of the vitamin E deficiency neurologic syndrome in children with prolonged neonatal cholestatic disorders, we studied 46 children (aged 1 month to 17.0 years) with chronic forms of intrahepatic neonatal cholestasis and 47 children (aged 4 months to 8.0 years) with extrahepatic biliary atresia.

Losses of Ca2+, Mg2+ and primary amines into waters between pH = 5 and 3 from eyed Chinook salmon eggs, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha , and gills excised from the freshwater, bivalve mollusc Anodonta californiensis were measured and compared to effluxes into distilled water. Sulfuric, nitric and hydrochloric acids were used. Even at pH = 5 losses of Ca2+ and Mg2+ from both biological systems occur at short times, minutes, and can exceed those found in water of higher pH (non-acid waters).

Hyperoxaluria is a complication of disorders associated with steatorrhea. The colon is the presumed site of enhanced oxalate absorption in patients with steatorrhea. We performed studies of colonic mucosal oxalate uptake in everted sacs of rat colon to determine the kinetics of colonic oxalate transport and to evaluate the effect of both pH and ricinoleic acid, a hydroxy fatty acid, on colonic oxalate uptake.
