With the development of modern material science, life science and medical science, implantation materials are widely employed in clinical fields. In recent years, these materials have also evolved from inert supports or functional substitutes to bioactive materials able to trigger or promote the regenerative potential of tissues. Reasonable biological evaluation of implantation materials is the premise to make sure their safe application in clinical practice.

Cometabolism has shown great potential in increasing the engineering feasibility of microalgae-based biotechnologies for the aerobic treatment of antibiotics-polluted wastewaters. Yet, the underlying mechanisms involved in improved microalgal performance remain unknown. In this study, we incorporated transcriptomics, gene network analysis, and enzymatic activities with cometabolic pathways of tetracycline (TC) by Chlorella pyrenoidosa to identify the key driving factors.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a growing concern in modern society, and there is currently a lack of effective therapeutic drugs. Sagacious Confucius' Pillow Elixir (SCPE) has been studied for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as AD. This study aimed to reveal the key components and mechanisms of SCPE's anti-AD effect by combining Ultra-high Performance Liquid Chromatography-electrostatic field Orbitrap combined high-resolution Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-LTQ/Orbitrap-MS) with a network pharmacology approach.

Plants are readily exposed to the antibiotics residues in reclaimed water indicating an urgent need to comprehensively analyze their ecotoxicological effects and fate of these emerging contaminants. Here, we unraveled the dissemination of enrofloxacin (ENR) in a pasture grass, Lolium perenne L., and identified multistage defense systems as its adaptation mechanism.

Article Synopsis
  • - Nutraceuticals that activate the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE pathway are explored for treating nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) since there are no specific approved drugs yet
  • - NAFLD progression is based on the 'two-hit' hypothesis: the first hit involves insulin resistance and lipid accumulation, while the second hit involves oxidative stress and inflammation
  • - The Keap1-Nrf2-ARE pathway has a complex role in NAFLD; it can either help reduce insulin resistance during the first hit or combat oxidative stress and inflammation during the second hit, leading to discussions about using its inhibitors for early treatment

Contamination of fluoroquinolones (FQs) are of emerging concerns because of their adverse effects on environment and humans. This study investigated the ecotoxicological effects, biodegradation, and multiple metabolic pathways of a frequently found FQ, enrofloxacin (ENR) by ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.).

Miniaturization is one of the important research directions of low frequency high power microwave sources. This paper presents a three-period coaxial slow-wave structure L-band high-power microwave source. Because the coaxial Quasi-TEM mode has no cut-off frequency, the radial size of the device can be reduced.

In this work, a photobioreactor with microalgae biofilm was proposed to enhance CO biofixation and protein production using nickel foam with the modified surface as the carrier for immobilizing microalgae cells. The results demonstrated that, compared with microalgae suspension, microalgae biofilm lowered mass transfer resistance and promoted mass transfer efficiency of CO from the bubbles into the immobilized microalgae cells, enhancing CO biofixation and protein production. Moreover, parametric studies on the performance of the photobioreactor with microalgae biofilm were also conducted.
