NF1 is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease, with a prevalence of at least 1 in 4000-5000 population. The diagnosis criteria of NF1 included typical manifestations such as café-au-lait spots, frecking in the axilla or inguinal region, multiple neurofibromas, Lisch nodeules, and distinctive osseous lesions. Genetic testing shows NF1 mutation.

Decreased numbers of circulating endothelial progenitor cells are associated with hyperglycemia in patients with traumatic brain injury.

Hyperglycemia reduces the number of circulating endothelial progenitor cells, accelerates their senescence and impairs their function. However, the relationship between blood glucose levels and endothelial progenitor cells in peripheral blood of patients with traumatic brain injury is unclear. In this study, 101 traumatic brain injury patients admitted to the Department of Neurosurgery, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital or the Department of Neurosurgery, Tianjin Huanhu Hospital, China, were enrolled from April 2005 to March 2007.

Erythropoietin regulates immune/inflammatory reaction and improves neurological function outcomes in traumatic brain injury.

Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a leading cause of disability and death among young people in China. Unfortunately, no specific pharmacological agents to block the progression of secondary brain injury have been approved for clinical treatment. Recently, neuroprotective effects of erythropoietin (EPO) have been demonstrated in addition to its principal function in erythropoiesis, and hence it is viewed as a potential drug for TBI.

Effects of aspirin and enoxaparin in a rat model of liver fibrosis.

Aim: To examine the effects of aspirin and enoxaparin on liver function, coagulation index and histopathology in a rat model of liver fibrosis. METHODS Forty-five male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into the control group (n = 5) and model group (n = 40). Thioacetamide (TAA) was used to induce liver fibrosis in the model group.

Cold water swimming pretreatment reduces cognitive deficits in a rat model of traumatic brain injury.

A moderate stress such as cold water swimming can raise the tolerance of the body to potentially injurious events. However, little is known about the mechanism of beneficial effects induced by moderate stress. In this study, we used a classic rat model of traumatic brain injury to test the hypothesis that cold water swimming preconditioning improved the recovery of cognitive functions and explored the mechanisms.

Observed and projected trends in paediatric health resources and services in China between 2003 and 2030: a time-series study.

Objectives: The two-child policy took effect in China on 1 January 2016, thus officially ending the one-child policy. The resultant growth in the population will create a considerable demand for public services such as paediatric healthcare, even while there are limited paediatric resources. We estimated the relationship between paediatric health resources and services and child mortality to determine the degree of the deficiency of such resources in China.

Full-thickness myotomy is associated with higher rate of postoperative gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Aim: To compare long-term occurrence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) between two different types of peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for achalasia.

Methods: We included all patients with achalasia who underwent POEM at our hospital from August 2011 to October 2012 and had complete GERD evaluation with ≥ 3 years of follow-up. They were divided into circular or full-thickness myotomy groups according to the depth of myotomy.

Peroral endoscopic myotomy for achalasia in patients aged ≥ 65 years.

Aim: To investigate the safety and efficacy of peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for achalasia in patients aged ≥ 65 years.

Methods: From November 2011 to August 2014, 15 consecutive patients (aged ≥ 65 years) diagnosed with achalasia were prospectively recruited and all underwent POEM at our institution. Eckardt score, lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure, esophageal diameter, SF-36 questionnaire, and procedure-related complications were used to evaluate the outcomes.

Role of regulatory T cell in clinical outcome of traumatic brain injury.

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a life-threatening disease worldwide. Regulatory T cells (Treg cells) were involved in the immunological system in central nervous system. It is defined as a subpopulation of CD4 + cells that express CD25 and transcription factor forkhead box P3.

Mobilization of circulating endothelial progenitor cells after endovascular therapy for ruptured cerebral aneurysms.

Emerging evidence shows that circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) promote regeneration of the endothelium at sites of vessel injury. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that EPCs are mobilized in patients who had ruptured cerebral aneurysm (CA) and underwent endovascular therapy. Fourteen patients with ruptured CAs were recruited and blood samples were analyzed after coil embolization surgery.

[Sequence polymorphism of the promoter region of gene STK11 in patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome].

Objective: To explore the relationship between the sequence variation of the promoter region (-1543 approximately -1160) of STK11 gene and the risk of developing Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS).

Methods: The sequences of the promoter region of 14 PJS patients (7 patients are inherited and the other 7 patients are sporadic) and 42 normal individuals were PCR amplified and then sequenced.

Results: A new single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) G/T (-1275) in STK11 promoter region was identified.
