Microscopic observation and settling test were carried out to investigate the structure, density and settlability of anammox granules taken from a high-rate upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The results showed that the anammox granules were irregular in shape and uneven on surface, and their structure included granule, subunit, microbial cell cluster and single cell. The gas pockets were often observed in the anammox granules, and they originated from the obstruction of gas tunnel by extracellular polymer substances (EPSs) and the inflation of produced dinitrogen gas.

In the title complex, [Cu(2)(CN)(2)(C(6)H(7)N)](n), there are two copper atoms with different coordination environments. One Cu atom (Cu1) is linked to the two cyanide ligands, one N atom from a pyridine ring while the other (Cu2) is coordinated by the two cyanide ligands in a slightly distorted tetra-hedral geometry and linked to Cu1, forming a triangular coordination environment. The Cu atoms are bridged by bidentate cyanide ligands, forming an infinite Cu-CN chain.

In the title Cu(II) complex, [Cu(C(7)H(3)NO(4))(C(6)H(5)NO(2))(H(2)O)]·H(2)O, the environment of the Cu(2+) ion is a distorted square pyramid with the axial site occupied by the O atom from the coordinated water mol-ecule and the square base formed by two O and two N atoms from the tridentate anion and the neutral monodentate pyridine-3-carboxylic acid ligand. O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, as well as π-π inter-actions [centroid-centroid distance = 3.945 (3) Å] contribute to the stabilization of this structure.

Autophagy is a highly conserved, closely regulated homeostatic cellular activity that allows for the bulk degradation of long-lived proteins and cytoplasmic organelles. Its roles in cancer initiation and progression and in determining the response of tumor cells to anticancer therapy are complicated, and only limited investigation has been conducted on the potential significance of autophagy in the pathogenesis and therapeutic response of acute myeloid leukemia. Here we demonstrate that the inducible or transfected expression of the acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL)-specific PML-RARα, but not PLZF-RARα or NPM-RARα, fusion protein upregulates constitutive autophagy activation in leukemic and nonleukemic cells, as evaluated by hallmarks for autophagy including transmission electron microscopy.

Unlabelled: Hyper IgE syndrome (HIES) is a rare primary immunodeficiency disorder, characterized by eczema, recurrent skin and lung infections, and significantly elevated serum IgE level. It was previously diagnosed based on clinical manifestations and laboratory markers that were not specific to the disease. Recent studies have demonstrated that mutations in signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) cause the autosomal dominant or sporadic HIES, which make the disease definitively characterized at molecular level.

The expression of galectin-1, one of the most important lectins participating in the malignant tumor development, has been shown to be regulated by hypoxia, but its exact mechanism remains elusive. Here, we find that ectopically expressed hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) 1alpha protein, an oxygen-sensitive subunit of HIF-1 that is a master factor for cellular response to hypoxia, significantly increases galectin-1 expression in both messenger RNA and protein levels in all four colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines tested. However, hypoxia-induced galectin-1 expression cannot be seen in sentrin/SUMO-specific protease 1 homozygous-null mouse embryonic fibroblasts that fail to accumulate HIF-1alpha protein.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is an important discovery in microbiology and environmental sciences, which can simultaneously remove NH4(+) -N and NO3(-) -N, being valuable in environmental engineering. However, anaerobic ammonium oxidizers are extremely slow-growing, and their population's doubling time is longer than 11 days, which seriously restricts the application of anammox process. Therefore, the study of anammox bacteria is of significance.
