Ferroelectric fluorite oxides such as hafnium (HfO)-based materials are one of the most promising candidates for future large-scale integrated circuits (ICs), while zirconia (ZrO)-based fluorite materials, which have the same structure as HfO and , are usually thought to be anti- or ferroelectric-like. Here, we report a remanent polarization () of ∼15 μC/cm in orthorhombic ZrO thin films at 77 K. This ferroelectricity arises from an electric field-induced antiferroelectric to ferroelectric phase transition, which is particularly noticeable at 77 K.

Energetic materials (EM) can be remotely, uniformly and rapidly excited by electromagnetic radiation. Mastering the response mechanism of EM to electromagnetic radiation and promoting the efficient utilization of electromagnetic energy are fundamental to the development of electromagnetic radiation-induced explosive technologies. EM are generally non-magnetic, so the effect of magnetic fields in the system can usually be negligible; instead, the focus is on the interaction between electric fields and EM.

Reductive functionalization of aldehydes and ketones is one of the most challenging but ultimately rewarding areas in synthetic chemistry and related sciences. We report a simple and extremely versatile carbonyl reductive functionalization strategy achieving direct, highly selective, and efficient reductive amination, etherification, esterification, and phosphinylation reactions of (hetero)aryl aldehydes and ketones, which are extremely challenging or unattainable to achieve by traditional strategies, using only diphenylphosphine oxide and an inorganic base. It enables modular synthesis of functionally and structurally diverse tertiary amines, ethers, esters, phosphine oxides, etc.

Perovskite oxides have a wide variety of physical properties that make them promising candidates for versatile technological applications including nonvolatile memory and logic devices. Chemical tuning of those properties has been achieved, to the greatest extent, by cation-site substitution, while anion substitution is much less explored due to the difficulty in synthesizing high-quality, mixed-anion compounds. Here, nitrogen-incorporated BaTiO thin films have been synthesized by reactive pulsed-laser deposition in a nitrogen growth atmosphere.

Article Synopsis
  • Thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection (TAAD) is linked to problems with vascular endothelial cells, and the role of platelet factor 4 (PF4) in this condition was previously unclear.
  • Researchers created a nanomedicine using liposome-encapsulated PF4 (Lipo-PF4) and found it significantly reduced TAAD formation compared to PF4 alone.
  • The study concluded that Lipo-PF4 helps enhance endothelial cell function and inhibits TAAD progression by interacting with specific signaling pathways, suggesting it could be a future treatment option for TAAD.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study explores a novel method for producing hydrogen by examining how gaseous hydrogen fluoride (HF) reacts with sodium (Na), an alkali metal.
  • - Traditional models struggle to explain the dynamic interactions during these reactions, so the researchers created a reaction model using a metallic Na slab and placed HF molecules above it to simulate the reaction.
  • - The findings reveal that sodium interacts with HF, forming an intermediate compound (NaFH) that eventually breaks down into sodium fluoride (NaF) and hydrogen (H), with the breaking of the F-H bond being the crucial step in the reaction process.

Objective: Multi-modal MR/CT image segmentation is an important task in disease diagnosis and treatment, but it is usually difficult to acquire aligned multi-modal images of a patient in clinical practice due to the high cost and specific allergic reactions to contrast agents. To address these issues, a task complementation framework is proposed to enable unpaired multi-modal image complementation learning in the training stage and single-modal image segmentation in the inference stage.

Method: To fuse unpaired dual-modal images in the training stage and allow single-modal image segmentation in the inference stage, a synthesis-segmentation task complementation network is constructed to mutually facilitate cross-modal image synthesis and segmentation since the same content feature can be used to perform the image segmentation task and image synthesis task.
