Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a brain-gut interaction disorder located in the stomach and duodenum, which has complex pathophysiological mechanisms, and there is no effective treatment for FD. Acupuncture and moxibustion have been proven to have definite and significant efficacy on FD. Focusing on the affected area and combined with the potential pathophysiology of FD, here we discuss the possible mechanisms of acupuncture and moxibustion in treating FD to guide future clinical and experimental research.

Background: Venous thromboembolism is the leading cause of death in cancer patients, second only to tumor progression. The Khorana score is recommended by clinical guidelines for identifying ambulatory cancer patients at high risk of venous thromboembolism during chemotherapy. However, its predictive performance is debated among cancer patients.

Objective: Despite successful recanalization following acute ischemic stroke, patients may have a poor prognosis. We investigated whether transcranial Doppler combined with quantitative electroencephalography can identify patients with a poor prognosis at an early stage.

Methods: Prospectively recruited patients with successful recanalization after endovascular treatment for acute ischemic stroke were assessed for prognosis at 90 days using the modified Rankin Scale.

Effective identification of sulfur ions (S) in foodstuff is crucial for food safety and human health, but it remains challenging. Traditional single-mode colorimetric sensing methods are simple and sensitive, but are prone to interference from colored substances which can lead to false positives or negatives results. Herein, we develop a novel "mix-response" biosensor for colorimetric and photothermal dual-mode detection of S with good simplicity, sensitivity and portability.

This article summarizes and discusses the collaborative effects of acupuncture and medication in treatment, including four aspects, named "acupuncture synergizing the effects of medication", "medication advancing the effects of acupuncture", "coordination of acupuncture and medication", and "antagonism of acupuncture and medication". Regarding "acupuncture synergizing the effects of medication", the actions of acupuncture are predominant, which affects the absorption and metabolism of drugs in the body, increases drug concentration in blood, enhances the targeting effect of drugs, guides meridian tropism, alleviates the drug dose and adverse reactions, avoids the first pass effect and accelerates the drug bioavailability. As for "medication advancing the effects of acupuncture", the synergistic effect of acupuncture is obtained by medication, besides, the medication itself may supplement the drug property to the needles during acupuncture pretreatment so as to increase the therapeutic effect.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common chronic gastrointestinal disorder, but its diagnosis and treatment remain obscure. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), as potential biomarkers, have attracted increasing attention in digestive diseases. Here, we present a comprehensive research status, development trends, and valuable insights in this subject area.

Enhancing the stability of multienzyme cascade reactions in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a challenging task in the fields of biotechnology and chemistry. However, addressing this challenge could yield far-reaching benefits across the application range in the biomedical, food, and environmental sectors. In this study, multienzyme partitioning immobilization that sequentially immobilizes cascade enzymes with hierarchical MOFs is proposed to reduce substrate diffusion resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2009, China initiated comprehensive healthcare reform aimed at creating accessible, affordable, and efficient health services, focusing on the health workforce, funding, and infrastructure as key components.
  • This study examines the regional disparities and inequities in the distribution of healthcare workers, specifically technicians and nurses, across Chinese hospitals and primary health centers over a twelve-year period.
  • The findings reveal that while the overall ratio of health workers has increased, rural and western districts have better ratios compared to urban and eastern districts, indicating ongoing inequalities in workforce allocation at different healthcare levels.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major complication of breast cancer surgical patients. Assessing VTE awareness enables medical staff to tailor educational programs that improve patient self-management and reduce VTE risk. Therefore, this study aimed to assess VTE awareness among breast cancer surgical patients and identify factors influencing their awareness level.

Purpose: In patients undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) may minimize neurological injury from blood pressure fluctuations. This study set out to investigate the function of dCA in predicting clinical outcomes following EVT.

Methods: 43 AIS of the middle cerebral or internal carotid artery patients underwent with EVT, and 43 healthy individuals (controls) were enrolled in this case control research.

Aims: Most studies focus on dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) in the middle cerebral artery (MCA), and few studies investigated neurovascular coupling (NVC) and dCA in the posterior cerebral artery (PCA). We investigated NVC and dCA of the PCA in healthy volunteers to identify sex differences.

Methods: Thirty men and 30 age-matched women completed dCA and NCV assessments.

Background: As an important monitoring index for adaptation to hypoxia, sleep may reflect the adaptive state of the body at high altitudes. The literature has shown a link between altitude and sleep problems, and sleep changes have become a common problem for individuals at high altitudes, negatively impacting their physical and mental health. As research on high-altitude sleep has gained attention in recent years, the publishing volume has increased worldwide, necessitating a more comprehensive understanding of this field.

Objective: Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS) is a severe complication of carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Because cerebral hyperperfusion (CH) reduces the benefits of CEA, it is important to identify patients at high risk of developing CH. We investigated dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) as a potential predictor of CH after CEA.

Aims: To delineate the clinical topography of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC)-related thrombosis in cancer patients.

Background: Most of the clinical features of PICC-related thrombosis are based on a single follow-up, which is insufficient to reflect the full topography of a thrombosis.

Design: This is an observational study conducted at West China Hospital, according to the STROBE guidelines.

Objective: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) may impair dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) of the middle cerebral artery (MCA). However, most studies have focused on dCA of the MCA; a few studies are based on the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) during silent reading and neurovascular coupling (NVC). This study explored the effects of CVST on dCA of the MCA and PCA during silent reading and NVC.

Objective: To investigate the clinical features of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC)-related thrombosis (PICCRT) within 2 weeks after PICC placement in cancer patients and its dynamic influence on the blood flow status of veins inserted with catheter, and to provide support for implementing thrombosis prevention and control measures.

Methods: Between May 2019 and July 2020, patients who had solid tumors and who had PICC were prospectively enrolled at West China Hospital, Sichuan University. Scheduled color Doppler imaging was performed to examine the status of PICCRT formation at 8 points of time, with the first one conducted one day before the insertion of PICC and the other 7 completed within 2 weeks after the insertion of PICC.
