Multidrug resistance (MDR) is the main cause for chemotherapeutic failure in cancer treatment. To overcome MDR, a serious of pyridine acid esters of podophyllotoxin was synthesized and their antiproliferation activities were evaluated against two human chronic myeloid leukemia cell lines in vitro. Most of them exhibited potent growth inhibition with IC50 values in the nanomolar range as well as markedly reduced resistance factors.

Currently, multi-drug resistance (MDR) to antineoplastic drugs is a major obstacle to successful treatment of carcinoma. Looking for novel agents with anti-MDR activity is an effectively way to overcome cancer drug resistance. Our previous study showed that podophyllotoxin derivative exhibited potent anti-proliferative effect and down-regulated the expression level of P-gp in K562/ADR cells, which probably was related with the MAPK pathways.

(13)CO₂ pulse-chase experiments monitored by high-resolution NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry can provide (13)C-isotopologue compositions in biosynthetic products. Experiments with a variety of plant species have documented that the isotopologue profiles generated with (13)CO₂ pulse-chase labeling are directly comparable to those that can be generated by the application of [U-(13)C₆]glucose to aseptically growing plants. However, the application of the (13)CO₂ labeling technology is not subject to the experimental limitations that one has to take into account for experiments with [U-(13)C₆]glucose and can be applied to plants growing under physiological conditions, even in the field.

Cellular uptake of vitamin B12 (cobalamin) requires capture of transcobalamin (TC) from the plasma by CD320, a ubiquitous cell surface receptor of the LDLR family. Here we present the crystal structure of human holo-TC in complex with the extracellular domain of CD320, visualizing the structural basis of the TC-CD320 interaction. The observed interaction chemistry can rationalize the high affinity of CD320 for TC and lack of haptocorrin binding.

Down-regulation of the miRNA miR-338-3p correlates with the invasive ability of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. However, it is currently unclear whether down-regulation of miR-338-3p induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which may be the underlying mechanism governing HCC invasion. Here, we demonstrate that restoration of miR-338-3p expression via transfection of a miR-338-3p mimic reversed EMT and inhibited the motility and invasiveness of HCC cells.

The reactions of p-toluenesulfonylmethyl isocyanide (TosMIC) with α-bromocarbonyl compounds leading efficiently to α-sulfonated ketones, esters, and amides were reported, in which an explicit new role of TosMIC as the sulfonylating agent was uncovered for the first time. Mechanistic study by control experiments and DFT calculations suggested that the reaction is initiated by Cu(OTf)2-catalyzed hydration of TosMIC to form a formamide intermediate, which undergoes facile C-S bond cleavage under the mediation of a Cs2CO3 additive.

For lower sampling rate and better imaging quality, a compressive adaptive ghost imaging is proposed by adopting the sharing mechanism and fellow relationship in the wavelet tree. The sharing mechanisms, including intrascale and interscale sharing mechanisms, and fellow relationship are excavated from the wavelet tree and utilized for sampling. The shared coefficients, which are part of the approximation subband, are localized according to the parent coefficients and sampled based on the interscale sharing mechanism and fellow relationship.

The colloidal properties of biogenic elemental sulfur (S(0)) cause solid-liquid separation problems, such as poor settling and membrane fouling. In this study, the separation of S(0) from bulk liquids was performed using flocculation. Polyaluminum chloride (PAC), polyacrylamide (PAM) and microbial flocculant (MBF) were compared to investigate their abilities to flocculate S(0) produced during the treatment of sulfate-containing wastewater.

To characterize the impact of influent loading on elemental sulfur (S) recovery during the denitrifying and sulfide oxidation process, three identical, lab-scale UASB reactors (30cm in length) were established in parallel under different influent acetate/nitrate/sulfide loadings, and the reactor performance and functional community structure were investigated. The highest S recovery was achieved at 77.9% when the acetate/nitrate/sulfide loading was set to 1.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine whether or not there was a gender difference in CPP (conditioned placed preference) induced by ketamine and to further explore the effect of sex on metabolic responses to ketamine inducing in SD rats.

Methods: We measured ketamine-induced conditioned place preference and ketamine-induced metabolic changes in urine by using (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) coupled with principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares (PLS) and orthogonal signal correction (OSC) analysis.

Results: In the CPP experiment, ketamine served as a positive reinforcing agent in both male and female rats, but, in particularly, the preference score of female rats was significantly higher than that of male rats.
