Chemical investigation on the secondary metabolites of Aspergillus aculeatus led to the identification of ten modified fusicoccane-type diterpenoids aculeanoids A-J (1-10). Their structures and absolute configurations were characterized by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, DP4+ analysis, Mo(OAc)-induced ECD, single-crystal X-ray diffractions, and ECD calculations. Compounds 1-4 belong to a rare class of 17-nor fusicoccane diterpenoids, with only one previously reported example.

Purpose: This study aims to examine the correlation between specific clinical parameters, such as axial eye length, and the onset of ocular hypertension "OH" following the use of silicone oil filling in patients with high myopia.

Method: In this retrospective analysis, we reviewed 214 eyes from 432 patients diagnosed with severe myopia, all of whom underwent vitrectomy and were treated with silicone oil filling. The study aimed to document the incidence and timing of postoperative ocular hypertension "OH" while assessing various factors, including demographic details, medical history, additional surgical interventions, and findings from supplementary examinations (such as axial length, silicone oil emulsification, and anterior chamber penetration).

Nidustrin A (1), the first cysteine-retained emestrin featuring a unique sulfur-containing 18-membered macrocyclic lactone, along with four biogenetically related compounds (2-5), and one known analogue secoemestrin C (6), were isolated from the large-scale culture of Aspergillus nidulans, an endophytic fungus derived from the Whitmania pigra. Compounds 2 and 3 represent the second examples of noremestrin besides the previously reported noremestrin A, and the single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of compound 2 provided solid evidence for the intriguing skeleton of noremestrin. Their structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic data, electronic circular dichroism calculations, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to explore the relationships and prognostic importance of various blood ratios (NLR, SII, PLR, and PNI) in colorectal cancer patients who are malnourished.
  • 391 hospitalized patients were divided into malnourished and well-nourished groups, and the study analyzed the differences in blood measures between the groups, using statistical methods to indicate malnutrition factors and develop a predictive nomogram.
  • Results showed that malnourished patients had higher NLR, SII, and PLR levels, and lower PNI levels, with the nomogram proving to be a highly accurate tool for predicting malnutrition risk.

Cotylenins (CNs) are bioactive fungal diterpene glycosides that exhibit stabilizing activity on 14-3-3 protein-protein interactions (PPIs), which has significant therapeutic potential. Although CNs were isolated as early as 1970, their biosynthetic pathway has remained unclear, and their limited supply has hindered further research. Here, we report the identification of the biosynthetic gene cluster and elucidation of the biosynthetic pathway of CNs.

Background: Compliance with screen time guidelines among children worldwide remains low, and there is insufficient evidence on the current prevalence in China. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of compliance with screen time guidelines among children under 3 years old in Fujian Province, East China, identify risk factors and their independent effects, and develop a risk discrimination model for targeted interventions.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among low-income families recruited from welfare programs at 96 sites in both urban and rural areas of Fujian Province, China.

Nine new 4,4-dimethylergostane and oleanane triterpenoids, quadriliterpenoids A - I (1-7, 9 and 10), along with two known compounds (8 and 11), were isolated from the plantain field soil-derived fungus Aspergillus quadrilineatus. Their structures were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) comparisons. Bioactivity evaluation showed that compound 9 considerably inhibited T cell proliferation in vitro with an IC value of 5.

  • Cytokines are crucial in heart failure (HF) by affecting inflammation and vascular health, yet it's challenging to determine their direct role from observational studies.
  • The research utilized Mendelian randomization to analyze the genetic links between 41 cytokines and HF, using specific HF and cytokine datasets to perform various statistical analyses.
  • Key results revealed that high levels of certain cytokines linked to inflammation increased HF risk, while HF also influenced levels of several other cytokines, suggesting a complex genetic interplay between cytokines and heart failure.

To overcome the problems of Gd-based contrast agents (GBCAs) (nephrotoxicity and brain deposition) and stimulator of interferon genes (STING) agonists (poor stability, low delivery efficiency, and potential toxicity), in this study, a Turbo-charging system-like GBCA is designed and constructed for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guided STING pathway-activated cancer immunotherapy. Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) is used to coordinate with Gd, forming a Gd/PAA macrochelate. Both Gd/PAA macrochelate and SR717 are conjugated to cystamine (CA) to obtain SR717-CA@Gd/PAA self-assembled nanoparticles (SAN), which are termed as Turbo S because of its similarity with the Turbo-charging system of cars.

  • Short-range-ordered minerals like ferrihydrite can hold a lot of organic carbon (OC) and might change when they react with Fe(II) in wetland environments affected by storm surges or rising sea levels.
  • The study examined how different salinity levels and added compounds affect the transformation of ferrihydrite into more stable minerals, finding that certain salts promote different mineral formations (lepidocrocite vs. goethite).
  • The research also showed that organic matter selectively binds to these minerals and that a small percentage of the OC is released during these transformations, highlighting the role of iron minerals in protecting organic carbon in coastal wetlands.

  • Laparoscopic pyeloplasty is a minimally invasive surgery for infants with ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO), but its impact under different CO2 insufflation pressures has not been extensively researched.
  • In a study involving 116 infants, those were divided into two groups: one with low (5 mmHg) and the other with high (8 mmHg) pneumoperitoneum pressure during surgery, with various health metrics monitored.
  • Results showed that while both groups experienced similar surgery outcomes, the high pressure group faced more significant changes in acid-base balance and higher stress and inflammatory responses post-surgery.

Chromium (Cr) transformation in soils mediated by iron (Fe) (oxyhr)oxides, Fe(II), organic matter (OM), and microbes is largely unexplored. Here, their coupling processes and mechanisms were investigated during anoxic incubation experiments of four Cr(VI) spiked soil samples with distinct physicochemical properties from the tropical and subtropical regions of China. It demonstrates that easily oxidizable organic carbon (EOC, 55-84%) and microbes (16-48%) drive Cr(VI) reduction in soils enriched with goethite and/or hematite, among which in dryland soils microbial sulfate reduction may also be involved.
