Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Endometriosis is a common gynecological disorder that manifests as chronic pelvic pain and subfertility. Guizhi Fuling Wan (GFW), which contains five herbs, was first described in Chinese canonical medicine to treat qi stagnation and circulation. Although the inhibition of endometriosis by GFW has been previously demonstrated, its efficacy could potentially be improved by adjusting the dose of each component.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the risk factors for early removal of implantable port catheters in cancer patients, particularly those with blood-related cancers, focusing on issues like infection and mechanical problems.
  • Data from 386 patients were analyzed, revealing that age, hemoglobin levels, and thrombocytopenia were significant variables; however, thrombocytopenia stood out as a key independent risk factor for unexpected early catheter removal.
  • Despite higher risks of catheter removal among patients with thrombocytopenia (average catheter survival of 61 days vs. 150 days for those without), overall survival rates were similar between early and non-early removal groups.

Empiric antibiotics are often prescribed in critically ill and preterm neonates at birth until sepsis can be ruled out. Although the current guideline suggests narrow-spectrum antibiotics, an upgrade in antibiotics is common in the neonatal intensive care unit. The impacts of initial broad-spectrum antibiotics on the outcomes of critically ill neonates with respiratory failure requiring mechanical intubation have not been well studied.

Immunocastration is an effective alternative to surgical castration for controlling the population of animals. As gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) regulates the reproductive endocrine system in mammals, it is a target antigen for vaccine formulation. Through this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a recombinant subunit GnRH-1 vaccine for the immunocastration of the reproductive function of 16 mixed-breed dogs (Canis familiaris) provided voluntarily by different households.

Outbreaks of avian influenza virus (AIV) have raised public concerns recently. Airborne AIV has been evaluated in live poultry markets and case farms; however, no study has discussed airborne AIV in ambient air in the winter habitats of migratory birds. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate airborne AIV, specifically H5, H7, and H9, in a critical winter habitat of migratory birds and assess the factors influencing airborne AIV transmission in ambient air to provide novel insights into the epidemiology of avian influenza.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease, is characterized by chronic joint inflammation and pain. We previously found that the deletion of T-cell death-associated gene 8 (TDAG8) significantly reduces disease severity and pain in RA mice. Whether it is by modulating gut microbiota remains unclear.

Objective: Endometriosis, defined as the growth of endometrial glands and stromal cells in a heterotopic location under the cyclic influence of ovarian hormones, is a common gynecological disorder manifested by chronic pelvic pain and infertility. In traditional Chinese medicine, endometriosis is characterized by stagnation of vital energy (qi) and blood stasis. Guizhi Fuling Wan (GFW) was first described in Chinese canonical medicine to treat disorders associated with stagnation of qi and blood stasis, including endometriosis.

Cancer cell-immune cell hybrids and cancer immunotherapy have attracted much attention in recent years. The design of efficient cell pairing and fusion chips for hybridoma generation has been, subsequently, a subject of great interest. Here, we report a three-layered integrated Microfluidic Flip-Chip (MFC) consisting of a thin through-hole membrane sandwiched between a mirrored array of microfluidic channels and saw-tooth shaped titanium electrodes on the glass.

(CPPV-1) is a DNA virus causing gastrointestinal disease and immunosuppression in various terrestrial carnivores. Domestic dogs and cats are considered the primary CPPV-1 reservoirs. The habitat overlap of wild carnivores and free-roaming dogs increases the threat of CPPV-1 transmission between them.

Article Synopsis
  • Drosophila melanogaster serves as a key model organism in neurobiology due to its small brain size, complex behaviors, and rich genetic tools available for research.
  • A comprehensive network of the Drosophila brain was developed using 28,573 neuron images from the FlyCircuit database, revealing eight functional communities related to different sensory and motor functions.
  • The study found that information exchange and structural stability varied among these communities, with a "rich club" structure highlighting the central complex's role in integrating information, while networks exhibited small-world characteristics and numerous short loops that suggest efficient information processing.

Using three-dimensional (3D) bone engineering to fabricate bone segments is a better choice for repairing bone defects than using autologous bone. However, biomaterials for bone engineering are burdened with some clinical safety concerns. In this study, we layered commonly found clinical materials, hemostatic gelatin sponges, in a novel manner to create a 3D scaffold for bone engineering purposes.

Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 (CPPV-1) is widespread among free-living carnivores, and CPPV-1 infection may directly or indirectly impact on the population of endangered carnivore species. In this study, we used molecular screening of viral capsid protein 2 (VP2) from 2015 to 2017, to assess the prevalence of CPPV-1 infection in 9 live-trapped (LT) and 17 vehicle collision (VC)-affected free-living leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis chinensis). In addition, we conducted the phylogenetic analysis to evaluate the possible transmission of CPPV-1 between domestic carnivores and leopard cats.
