Genetic human prion diseases are a group of inherited encephalopathies directly associated with different mutations in PrP-encoding gene , including more than 50 different mutations worldwide. Some genotypes of mutations show ethno-correlation, and among them, genetic Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (gCJD) with V210I mutation is frequent in European countries but rare in East Asia. Here, we comparatively analyzed the clinical and laboratory features of three Chinese patients with V210I mutant identified via the Chinese National CJD Surveillance System (CNS-CJD) in 2019.

Photocatalysis technology using solar energy for hydrogen (H ) production still faces great challenges to design and synthesize highly efficient photocatalysts, which should realize the precise regulation of reactive sites, rapid migration of photoinduced carriers and strong visible light harvest. Here, a facile hierarchical Z-scheme system with ZnIn S /BiVO heterojunction is proposed, which can precisely regulate redox centers at the ZnIn S /BiVO hetero-interface by accelerating the separation and migration of photoinduced charges, and then enhance the oxidation and reduction ability of holes and electrons, respectively. Therefore, the ZnIn S /BiVO heterojunction exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance with a much higher H -evolution rate of 5.

By utilizing the bipolarity of 1,2-diphenylphenanthroimidazole (PPI), two types of asymmetrical tripartite triads (PPI-TPA and PPI-PCz) were designed with triphenylamine (TPA) and 9-phenylcarbazole (PCz). These triads are deep-blue luminescent materials with a high fluorescence quantum yield of nearly 100 %. To trace the photophysical behaviors of these triads, their excited-state evolution channels and interchromophoric interactions were investigated by ultrafast time-resolved transient absorption and excited-state theoretical calculations.

Resveratrol shows the ability to block prion replication in a scrapie-infected cell line, SMB-S15, and remove the infectivity of the treated cell lysates in an experimental bioassay. In this study, we compared the effectiveness of three stilbene compounds, resveratrol (Res), pterostilbene (Pte), and piceatannol (Pic), on inhibiting prion propagations in the levels of cell culture, PMCA, and RT-QuIC. All three chemicals showed active suppressions on PrP replication in SMB-S15 cells, in which Res seemed to be the most active one, followed by Pic and Pte.

The rapid development of single-cell transcriptome sequencing technology has provided us with a cell-level perspective to study biological problems. Identification of cell types is one of the fundamental issues in computational analysis of single-cell data. Due to the large amount of noise from single-cell technologies and high dimension of expression profiles, traditional clustering methods are not so applicable to solve it.

A superior electrochemical biosensor was designed for the determination of UO in aqueous solution by integration of DNAzyme and DNA-modified gold nanoparticle (DNA-AuNP) network structure. Key features of this method include UO inducing the cleavage of the DNAzyme and signal amplification of DNA-AuNP network structure. In this electrochemical method, the DNA-AuNP network structure can be effectively modified on the surface of gold electrode and then employed as an ideal signal amplification unit to generate amplified electrochemical response by inserting a large amount of electrochemically active indicator methylene blue (MB).

Palm oil (PO), leaf lard oil (LO), rapeseed oil (RO), sunflower oil (SO), and linseed oil (LINO) are the five of the most typical dietary lipids, while few studies have explored and compared their influences on the serum lipid profiles, colonic short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) composition and colon health of Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. Results from the present work showed that PO and LO groups showed significantly higher serum TG and TC level compared with Ctrl group, whereas, the LDL-C/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C ratio were significantly lower in the RO, SO and LINO groups. Different dietary lipid consumption (15% of the normal diet) decreased the colonic SCFAs concentration.

Activation of inflammatory cells and upregulations of a number of cytokines in the central nervous system (CNS) of patients with prion diseases are frequently observed. To evaluate the potential changes of some brain cytokines that were rarely addressed during prion infection, the levels of 17 different cytokines in the brain homogenates of mice infected with different scrapie mouse-adapted agents were firstly screened with Luminex assay. Significant upregulations of interferon gamma-induced protein 10 (IP10), keratinocyte chemoattractant (KC) and macrophage colony stimulating factor (M-CSF) were frequently detected in the brain lysates of many strains of scrapie infected mice.

As an important two-dimensional material, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) show considerable potential in electrocatalytic reactions. However, the great thickness of the bulk LDH materials significantly limits their catalytic activity. In this work, we report ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets with sulfate interlayer anions (NiFe(SO)(OH)·7HO) (U-LDH(SO )), which can be synthesized in gram-scale by a simple solvothermal method.

Background: Recently, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to have immunomodulatory properties which hold promise for their clinical use to treat inflammatory conditions. Relative to bone marrow-derived MSCs (BMSCs), which are typically isolated from the iliac crest, we have recently demonstrated that MSCs can be predictably isolated from the alveolar bone (aBMSCs) by less invasive means. As such, the aim of this study was to characterize the immunomodulatory properties of aBMSCs relative to BMSCs.
