Pain Management After Cesarean Delivery Among Women with Opioid Use Disorder: Results from a Retrospective Pregnancy Cohort in a Rural Region of the Midwest.

Background: Increasing numbers of pregnant women are being treated with buprenorphine for opioid use disorder (OUD), which can interfere with effectiveness of other opioids used for pain relief, making perioperative guidance for patients requiring cesarean delivery unclear.

Methods: Using a retrospective cohort design, we abstracted 8 years of medical records (2013-2020) from a hospital in rural Michigan. We compared analgesic use (as a proxy for pain) and hospital length of stay (LOS) between groups of women with OUD whose buprenorphine treatment was (1) discontinued before cesarean delivery (discontinuation) versus (2) continued throughout the perioperative period (maintenance).

Optimizing diet quality is an important concept for college athletes. : To evaluate dietary quality of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I athletes. : Total 94 college athletes (n= 21 male, 73 female) from 19 different varsity teams at a single university completed a 24-hour dietary recall using the Automated Self-Administered 24-hour (ASA24) Dietary Assessment Tool.

Supporting family meal frequency: Screening Phase results from the Simply Dinner Study.

We aimed to test main, additive, interactive effects, and feasibility of all possible combinations of six intervention components implemented for 8 weeks (Cooking/Serving Resources; Meal Delivery; Ingredient Delivery; Community Kitchen; Nutrition Education; Cooking Demonstrations). Primary outcomes were family meal frequency and preschoolers' dietary quality; secondary outcomes included family meal preparation type, meal preparation barriers, family functioning, and kitchen inventory adequacy. All possible intervention combinations were tested using a randomized factorial trial design in the first phase of a Multiphase Optimization Strategy (MOST).

The healthfulness of children's meals when multiple media and devices are present.

Although television viewing during mealtime has been shown to associate with greater consumption of energy-dense foods, little is known about how new technological devices may influence children's food consumption. Because the number and type of media accessible to children continue to increase, this study examines the association between the presence of various media (TVs, mobile devices, video games, laptops) during mealtime and the healthfulness of children's meals. In this study, 61 primary caregivers of children ages 3-5 years and 10-13 years old participated in video-recorded dinner meals, which were reliably coded for media use, including number of media present.

Coordination of the Fetal Medicine Institute and the Cleft and Craniofacial Center: Application to Early Management of Infants With Cleft Lip and Palate.

Background/purpose: The primary objective of this study is to describe the authors' experience at the Children's National Health System with the coordination of the Fetal Medicine Institute and the Cleft and Craniofacial Center. This collaboration highlights the accuracy and completeness of prenatal diagnosis of cleft abnormalities with expedient postnatal management.

Methods: With Institutional Review Board approval, the authors retrospectively reviewed 74 patients referred for potential orofacial cleft and 44 met the inclusion criteria.

Biphasic anaphylaxis: A review of the literature and implications for emergency management.

Background: The biphasic reaction is a feared complication of anaphylaxis management in the emergency department (ED). The traditional recommended ED observation time is 4-6 h after complete resolution of symptoms for every anaphylaxis patient. However, there has been great controversy regarding whether this standard of care is evidence-based.

Pre-oxygenation: Implications in emergency airway management.

Transient oxygen desaturation during emergency department intubation is an event with potentially devastating consequences. Pre-oxygenation is an important means of increasing a patient's oxygen reserve and duration of safe apnea prior to intubation. In the emergent setting, important modifications to pre-oxygenation techniques need to be considered to best manage critically ill patients.

Background: Activated Stat3 is an important mediator of oncogenesis in the colon. To test the hypothesis that select Stat activation and/or the pattern of Stat activation serves as a marker for early neoplastic transformation, we examined the distribution of activated Stat1(pStat1), Stat6(pStat6), and Stat3(pStat3) in colitis along the continuum of inactive disease to colitis-associated cancer.

Methods: Tissue microarrays were constructed using colonoscopy biopsy and surgical specimens from 67 patients with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's colitis and 11 controls.
