Image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) encompasses the taking, sharing, and/or threatening to share nude or sexual images of others without their consent. The prevalence of IBSA is growing rapidly due to technological advancements, such as access to smartphones, that have made engagement in such activities easier. Bystanders offer an important means of intervention, but little is known about what facilitates or inhibits bystander action in these contexts.

Article Synopsis
  • The article systematically reviews literature on factors that affect bystander intervention in sexual violence situations, focusing on direct, tertiary, and secondary prevention.
  • It highlights that individual characteristics, particularly the gender of the bystander, play a significant role, with females more likely to intervene than males, although this varies by intervention type.
  • It also discusses situational factors like the presence of other bystanders and contextual elements such as social norms, suggesting that a belief in peer support for intervention enhances likelihood, while noting the need for more research on how these variables interact.
