- This study focused on the safety and effectiveness of a topical oral spray containing recombinant human intestinal trefoil factor (rhITF) to prevent and treat chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis (OM) in colorectal cancer patients.
- Ninety-nine patients with moderate to severe OM received either a placebo, low-dose rhITF (10 mg/mL), or high-dose rhITF (80 mg/mL) for 14 days, showing significant reductions in OM incidence (75% to 81%) and severity compared to the placebo group.

Disorders of wound healing characterized by impaired or delayed re-epithelialization are a serious medical problem. These conditions affect many tissues, are painful, and are difficult to treat. In this study using cornea as a model, we demonstrate the importance of trefoil factor 3 (TFF3, also known as intestinal trefoil factor) in re-epithelialization of wounds.
