Article Synopsis
  • Excessive androgen levels in postmenopausal women are often due to hormonal imbalances, primarily a rapid decline in estrogen and a slower decrease in androgens, alongside lower levels of sex hormone-binding globulin.
  • *Hyperandrogenism poses risks such as increased cardiovascular issues, gynecological cancers, and negative effects on women's emotional health, making proper evaluation essential for treatment.
  • *Common symptoms women may experience include facial hair growth and hair loss; sudden onset or severe symptoms warrant further investigation for potential tumors, with diagnosis assisted by medical history, testosterone level testing, and imaging studies.

Article Synopsis
  • The menopause transition significantly increases a woman's risk of mood disorders due to fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels.
  • Low estradiol levels after menopause impact the central nervous system, leading to an imbalance in neurotransmission that can result in symptoms like hot flashes, depression, and anxiety.
  • The review highlights the complex neuroendocrine changes occurring during this transition, focusing on the various signaling pathways and neurotransmitters involved in mood alterations.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study investigated the link between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) and muscle strength/body composition in 112 postmenopausal women aged 41-71.
  • * Results showed that women with higher Mediterranean Dietary Scores (MedDietScore) had better handgrip strength and lean mass compared to those with lower scores.
  • * The findings imply that increased adherence to the MD may enhance muscle strength and lean body mass, suggesting the need for further research to understand its implications for cardiovascular health in midlife.

Background: Although misoprostol has been used as a potential option for cervical priming prior to hysteroscopy, the available scientific evidence regarding its use is not always conclusive. The purpose of this article is to assess the different practices and criteria applied for the use of misoprostol use for cervical preparation in outpatient hysteroscopy without anesthesia among gynecologists across Spain, exploring the need for the corresponding evidence-based guidelines.

Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study in which a two-step approach survey was conducted.

Objective: To compare the effects of fractional CO2 laser and microablative fractional radiofrequency treatment with promestriene topical estrogen on sexual function and genitourinary syndrome of menopause symptoms.

Methods: This was a prospective randomized open-label clinical trial conducted with 62 postmenopausal women assigned to three intervention groups: a) topical promestriene for 90 days (n = 17); b) fractional CO2 laser treatment (n = 24); and c) microablative fractional radiofrequency treatment (n = 21). Each of the latter two groups underwent three treatment sessions at 4-week intervals.

Objective: The aim of the study is to identify suitable definitions and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to assess each of the six core outcomes previously identified through the COMMA (Core Outcomes in Menopause) global consensus process relating to vasomotor symptoms: frequency, severity, distress/bother/interference, impact on sleep, satisfaction with treatment, and side effects.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted to identify relevant definitions for the outcome of side-effects and PROMs with acceptable measurement properties for the remaining five core outcomes. The consensus process, involving 36 participants from 16 countries, was conducted to review definitions and PROMs and make final recommendations for the measurement of each core outcome.

Obesity is not a choice or a result of lack of willpower, but a multifactorial, chronic, progressive, and relapsing disease. During menopause, hormonal and body composition changes lead to greater visceral adiposity, that aggravates women's health at a cardiometabolic, mechanic and mental level. Adiposity has been identified as an important modifier of reproductive hormones.
