Article Synopsis
  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is an effective treatment for obesity and type 2 diabetes, and this study aimed to assess its impact on glycemic variability (GV) and hypoglycemia in patients.
  • The research involved 10 participants who were monitored before surgery and at 1 month, 1 year, and 2 years post-surgery using continuous glucose monitoring, along with mixed-meal tests.
  • Findings revealed that while average glucose levels decreased after RYGB, glycemic variability increased over time, leading to an increased risk of postbariatric hypoglycemia in some participants due to higher levels of GLP-1 response.

Objective: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) augments postprandial secretion of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), oxyntomodulin (OXM), and peptide YY (PYY). Subcutaneous infusion of these hormones ("GOP"), mimicking postprandial levels, reduces energy intake. Our objective was to study the effects of GOP on glycemia and body weight when given for 4 weeks to patients with diabetes and obesity.

Background: Hot flushes affect 70% of menopausal women and often severely impact physical, psychosocial, sexual, and overall wellbeing. Hormone replacement therapy is effective but is not without risk. Neurokinin B signalling is increased in menopausal women, and has been implicated as an important mediator of hot flushes.
