The enzyme beta1,4-N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase III (beta4GalNAc-T3) exhibits in vitro activity of synthesizing N,N'-diacetyllactosediamine, GalNAcbeta1,4GlcNAc. Here, we investigate the expression of beta4GalNAc-T3 in primary colon tumors and the effects of its overexpression on HCT116 colon cancer cells. Real-time reverse transcription-PCR showed that the expression of beta4GalNAc-T3 was up-regulated in 72.

Surface irregularities (mono and diatomic steps, corners, step divacancies, and kinks) have been considered to model the IR spectra of hydroxylated MgO powders. A good correspondence between calculated and experimental frequencies is obtained with the B3LYP functional.

Endothelin 1 (ET-1) produced abundantly by prostate cancer cells binds to its receptor present on bone marrow stromal cells and favors osteoblastic response during bone metastases of prostate cancer. This suggests that interrupting ET-1 interaction with its endothelin A (ET(A)) receptor could be useful for inhibiting prostate cancer bone metastasis and, as such, may enhance the therapeutic activity of docetaxel (Taxotere), the most commonly used drug for the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer.

Pretreatment of tumor cells with genistein potentiated radiation-induced killing in vitro and in orthotopic models in vivo. However, pure genistein promoted increased lymph node metastasis, when administered alone in vivo.

However, very little evidence has been given so far to support this hypothesis. It is demonstrated here by X-ray diffraction, TEM, electron diffraction, and solubility studies that a second process of hydration takes place that involves the dissolution of alumina and subsequent precipitation of well-shaped Al(OH)3 particles from supersaturated alumina aqueous solution.

However, when genistein was used as single therapy in animal models, it promoted metastasis to regional para-aortic lymph nodes. To clarify whether these intriguing adverse effects of genistein are intrinsic to the orthotopic prostate tumor model, or these results could also be recapitulated in another model, we used the orthotopic metastatic KCI-18 renal cell carcinoma (RCC) model established in our laboratory.

Background: High-dose corticosteroid exposure is associated with increased risk of bone loss and osteoporotic fractures.
Objective: To examine high-dose corticosteroid use and osteoporosis screening and treatment trends in patients receiving high-dose oral or inhaled corticosteroids in a large managed care organization.
Methods: We reviewed electronic records of inhaled and oral corticosteroid use and osteoporosis intervention in 2002 among patients 20 years or older and developed algorithms to quantitate high cumulative exposure to corticosteroids.

Ions of lowest coordination induce the strongest surface geometry relaxation and the highest surface energies. The hydration energies of these sites and thermodynamic stabilities of the resulting surfaces were studied.

First, the three photoluminescence fingerprints of oxide ions vs their coordination number have been obtained for samples outgassed at 1273 K. By a pseudo quantitative approach, the relative distribution of the oxide ions of low coordination O(2-)LC (where LC = 3C, 4C, and 5C refer to tri-, tetra-, and pentacoordinated oxide ions, respectively) was determined and correlated with the shape and size of MgO particles determined by TEM and XRD.

Using an orthotopic xenograft in nude mice, we demonstrated that genistein combined with prostate tumor irradiation caused greater inhibition of primary tumor growth and increased control of spontaneous metastasis to para-aortic lymph nodes, increasing mouse survival. Paradoxically, treatment with genistein alone increased metastasis to lymph nodes.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate outcomes of a disease-management program designed to increase rates of bone-mineral-density (BMD) testing and initiation of osteoporosis medication among patients with a recent osteoporotic fracture.
Study Design: We identified 744 consecutive patients aged>or=55 years who were seen at either of 2 of 14 Kaiser Permanente medical facilities in Northern California (KPNC) after sustaining a fracture of the hip, spine, wrist, or humerus between April 2003 and May 2004. These patients were invited to participate in a study of the Fragile Fracture Management Program, whose protocol used fracture-risk assessment tools to determine treatment recommendations.
The synthesis and characterization of a series of mixed W-Zr polynuclear Lindqvist-type complexes, deriving from hexatungstate [W6O19]2-, are described in this work. This family of compounds is built from {W5O18Zr}2- moieties as shown by the X-ray structures of the monomeric [W5O18Zr(H2O)(3-n)(DMSO)n]2- (n = 1 and 2) and dimeric [{W5O18Zr(mu-OH)}2]6- anions. A comprehensive spectroscopic study (183W NMR, FTIR, Raman, EXAFS, and EPR) of these compounds is presented.

It is shown that the electrochemical reduction of these complexes occurs according to a multistage mechanism involving two electrochemical steps, with the formation of a dimer that was characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy (intervalence band at 670 nm). The apparent standard redox potential for each step has been determined, and experimental results reveal that cis and trans complexes present similar electrochemical characteristics.

The QM protein is a transcription cofactor inhibiting the activity of AP-1 transcription factors and is also a ribosomal protein participating in protein synthesis. While protein synthesis is known to be increased in many cancers, inhibition of AP-1 activity presumably suppresses development and growth of sex-hormone-regulated tumor cells. The present study is the first report on immunohistochemical data of QM in human prostatic tissues.
