Is TSH a Reliable Indicator of Thyroid Hormone Status in Pregnancy?

Thyroid screening is recommended during pregnancy with serum thyrotropin (TSH) as the primary test. However, since human chorionic gonadotropin, the serum hallmark of pregnancy, has TSH-like effects, the adequacy of TSH as a screening tool in this constellation requires further study. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between TSH and thyroid hormones during pregnancy in order to determine if TSH is an adequate screening tool.

Silver or gold? A comparison of nanoparticle modified electrochemical genosensors based on cobalt porphyrin-DNA.

We applied a cobalt-porphyrin modified DNA as electrochemical marker, which was attached to nanoparticles, to detect specific DNA sequences. We compare the performance of gold and silver NPs in oligonucleotide sensors to determine if a change in metal will lead to either higher sensitivity or different selectivity, based on the redox behaviour of silver vs. gold.

Cry75Aa (Mpp75Aa) Insecticidal Proteins for Controlling the Western Corn Rootworm, , (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Isolated from the Insect Pathogenic Bacteria .

This study describes three closely related proteins, cloned from strains, that are lethal upon feeding to LeConte, the western corn rootworm (WCR). Mpp75Aa1, Mpp75Aa2 and Mpp75Aa3 were toxic to WCR larvae when fed purified protein. Transgenic plants expressing each mMpp75Aa protein were protected from feeding damage and showed significant reduction in adult emergence from infested plants by both susceptible and Cry3Bb1 and Cry34Ab1/Cry35Ab1-resistant WCR.

The Western corn rootworm (WCR) Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte is one of the most economically important insect pests in North America. Since 2003, transgenic maize expressing WCR-active proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been widely adopted as the main approach to controlling WCR in the U.S.

Crystal structures and phase transition behaviour in the 5d transition metal oxides AReO (A = Ag, Na, K, Rb, Cs and Tl).

The structures of the six perrhenates (AReO4 A = Ag, Na, K, Rb, Cs and Tl) at room temperature have been established using powder neutron diffraction methods. These demonstrate the rigid nature of the ReO4 tetrahedra, with the Re-O distances decreasing very slightly and the O-Re-O bond angles approaching the regular tetrahedron value of 109.5° as the size of the A-type cation increases.

Approaching single DNA molecule detection with an ultrasensitive electrochemical genosensor based on gold nanoparticles and cobalt-porphyrin DNA conjugates.

We describe an ultrasensitive electrochemical genosensor based on gold nanoparticles and cobalt-porphyrin functionalised ssDNA probes. The sensitivity at the attomolar concentration level arises from an increased density of redox labels on the electrode surface compared to sensors without NP modification. The electrode detects as few as 23 DNA molecules, approaching single molecule detection.

FT3 IS HIGHER IN MALES THAN IN FEMALES AND DECREASES OVER THE LIFESPAN.

Objective: Normal changes in free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels over the lifespan and differences between sexes are not well documented, mainly because even the largest-scale studies available include relatively small cohorts. The aim of this study was to define age-related trends including sex differences based on reliable data.

Methods: A large database including serum thyroid tests drawn in community clinics was studied.

Validation of an innovative instrument of Positive Oral Health and Well-Being (POHW).

Introduction: Most existing measures of oral health focus solely on negative oral health, illness, and deficiencies and ignore positive oral health. In an attempt to commence exploration of this challenging field, an innovative instrument was developed, the "Positive Oral Health and Well-Being" (POHW) index. This study aimed to validate this instrument and to explore an initial model of the pathway between oral health attributes and positive oral health.

A community-based multicenter trial of pharmacokinetically guided 5-fluorouracil dosing for personalized colorectal cancer therapy.

Background: Pharmacokinetically guided (PK-guided) versus body surface area-based 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) dosing results in higher response rates and better tolerability. A paucity of data exists on PK-guided 5-FU dosing in the community setting.

Patients And Methods: Seventy colorectal cancer patients, from one academic and five community cancer centers, received the mFOLFOX6 regimen (5-FU 2,400 mg/m(2) over 46 hours every 2 weeks) with or without bevacizumab at cycle 1.

Frequent attenders to the ED: patients who present with repeated asthma exacerbations.

Background: Asthma has been reported as one of the main causes of frequent attendance to the emergency department (ED), and many of those visits are potentially preventable. Understanding the characteristics of frequent attender (FA) patients with asthmatic exacerbations will help to identify factors associated with frequent attendance and improve case management. The aim of this study is to describe the characteristics of FA who present multiple times to the ED for asthma exacerbations.

Experimental study of phase noise in FBAR resonators.

Phase noise of micromachined bulk acoustic wave resonators is investigated. A measurement bench, able to characterize the phase noise of a single resonator on-wafer, is set up. The experimental data demonstrate the existence of a 1/f phase noise component, the amplitude of which is strongly dependent on the resonator geometry.

Antimetastatic drugs in prostate cancer.

Despite the benefits of local therapy with radical prostatectomy and radiation, many patients with prostate cancer require hormonal ablation. While chemotherapy has proven efficacy when the disease progresses to androgen-independent prostate cancer, patients ultimately succumb to the disease, thus the identification of other active therapies is needed. Future treatment modalities include molecular targeted therapies.

Phase II trial of paclitaxel, estramustine, etoposide, and carboplatin in the treatment of patients with hormone-refractory prostate carcinoma.

Background: Preclinical data suggest that the combination of intravenous (i.v.) paclitaxel, carboplatin, oral etoposide, and oral estramustine (TEEC) has significant activity in patients with advanced, hormone-refractory prostate carcinoma.

Agrobacterium-mediated large-scale transformation of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) using glyphosate selection.

An Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system with glyphosate selection has been developed for the large-scale production of transgenic plants. The system uses 4-day precultured immature embryos as explants. A total of 30 vectors containing the 5-enol-pyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase gene from Agrobacterium strain CP4 (aroA:CP4), which confers resistance to glyphosate, were introduced into wheat using this system.

Stromal factors involved in prostate carcinoma metastasis to bone.

Background: Prostate carcinoma (PC) frequently metastasizes to bone, where it causes significant morbidity and mortality. Stromal elements in the primary and metastatic target organs are important mediators of tumor cell intravasation, chemoattraction, adhesion to target organ microvascular endothelium, extravasation, and growth at the metastatic site.

Methods: The role of stromal factors in bone metastasis was determined with a cyclic DNA microarray comparison of a bone-derived cell PC cell line with a soft tissue-derived cell PC cell line and by evaluating the effects of selected stromal components on PC cell chemotaxis, cell adhesion to human bone marrow endothelium (HBME), and PC cell growth.

A functional thrombin receptor (PAR1) is expressed on bone-derived prostate cancer cell lines.

Objectives: To identify genes important in prostate cancer metastatic to bone. Bone-specific metastasis is a common feature of prostate cancer and a significant cause of morbidity.

Methods: To identify factors involved in organ-specific metastasis, we used cDNA microarray analysis to compare a bone-derived cell line, VCaP, with a soft tissue-derived cell line, DuCaP.

The role of alpha(v)beta(3) in prostate cancer progression.

Integrin alpha(v)beta(3) is involved in varied cell biological activities, including angiogenesis, cell adhesion, and migration on several extracellular matrix components. Although alpha(v)beta(3) is not typically expressed in epithelial cells, it is expressed in macrophages, activated leukocytes, cytokine-stimulated endothelial cells, osteoclasts, and certain invasive tumors. Interestingly, the adhesion and migration of breast cancer cells on bone matrix are mediated, in part, by alpha(v)beta(3).

Androgen independence and bone metastasis are lethal complications in patients with advanced prostate cancer. Presently, there is no cure for patients with androgen-independent prostate cancer. In order to develop more effective therapies for this disease, the molecular events involved in the development of androgen independence and bone metastasis must be elucidated and then targeted by therapeutic agents.

Adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy in prostate cancer.

While surgery and radiation therapy remain the only definitive treatments for prostate cancer, single modality therapy has been associated with high failure rates in patients with aggressive disease. Although hormonal therapy has been effective in cases of metastatic disease, the timing of treatment with respect to definitive therapy remains controversial. This review will explore the efficacy of hormonal and chemotherapy in both the adjuvant and neoadjuvant settings.

Formation of circular satellite tobacco ringspot virus RNA in protoplasts transiently expressing the linear RNA.

The most abundant form of the satellite RNA of tobacco ringspot virus (sTRSV RNA) is a linear, unit length molecule of 359 nucleotide residues, designated L-(+)M. A postulated replication scheme for the satellite RNA has as its first, and apparently virus-independent, step the ligation of L-(+)M into the corresponding circular form C-(+)M. We transiently expressed L-(+)M wild type and L-(+)M mutants in tobacco protoplasts using an African cassava mosaic geminivirus vector.
