The function and structure of the mammalian epithelial cell layer is maintained by distinct intercellular adhesion complexes including junctions (AJs), tight junctions, and desmosomes. The AJ is most integral for stabilizing cell-cell adhesion and conserving the structural integrity of epithelial tissues. AJs are comprised of the transmembrane protein E-cadherin and cytoplasmic catenin cofactors (α, β, γ, and p120-catenin).

Background: Knowledge of underlying pathophysiology of coagulopathy is evolving and the pattern of coagulation parameters in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated diseases is still not very clear.

Aims: In the present study, we aimed to find out the pattern and distribution of conventional coagulation parameters and thromboelastographic (TEG) parameters in COVID-19-associated coagulopathy (CAC) in survivors and nonsurvivors at 28 days.

Setting And Design: The present prospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary care COVID-19 intensive care unit (ICU) facility from March 21, 2020, to July 15, 2021.

Background & Objective: Breast cancer is the leading cancer among Indian women and accounts for about 25% of all cancer cases worldwide. The present study aimed to assess Programmed Death Ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression in tumoral cells and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and evaluate their correlations with the Ki-67 labelling index in invasive breast carcinomas (IBC).

Methods: This descriptive observational study was conducted during 2016-2018 and included all diagnosed cases of IBC.

The widespread use of anti-D immunoglobulin has resulted in a relative increase in the importance of non-D alloimmunization as a cause of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). Non-D alloantibodies that are capable of causing severe HDFN include anti-K, anti-E, and anti-c. Anti-c is clinically the most important Rh system antibody after anti-D.

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) being a diuretic drug widely used in anti-hypertensive therapy as it lowers the blood pressure by reducing the reabsorption of electrolytes in kidney resulting an increment of urine output and lowering the blood pressure. The purpose of the present work is to study the structural, vibrational and chemical properties of HCTZ based on its monomeric, dimeric and trimeric models by utilizing computational methods and experimental techniques. Density functional theory (DFT) with functional B3LYP and 6-311++G (d, p) basis set was used for a detailed computational study.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on the presentation and management of symptomatic gallstone disease (GSD) in elderly patients (over 60 years) in western India, noting that the incidence increases with age and often leads to diagnostic delays and complications.
  • - Primary objectives included documenting symptoms, diagnosis, and intraoperative findings related to GSD, while secondary aims looked at associations with age, sex, and other health issues like diabetes and hypertension.
  • - In total, 76 patients were analyzed (73.7% female), with an average age of 70.8 years; most presented with abdominal pain, and data were statistically examined to understand various relationships and outcomes.

Background: Recurrent or de novo nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are common after liver transplantation (LT) and may be associated with rapid progression to fibrosis; however, there is limited data in this regard after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT).

Material And Methods: This is a retrospective study at a high volume LDLT center of all liver biopsies performed in patients with post-transplant NAFLD diagnosed on ultrasound of the abdomen. Liver biopsy was indicated for raised transaminases and/or high liver stiffness on TE.

Crop improvement under changing climatic conditions is required to feed the growing global population. The development of transgenic crops is an attractive and conceivably the most effective approach for crop improvement with desired traits in varying climatic situations. Here, we describe a simple, efficient and robust in planta -mediated genetic transformation method that can be used in most crops, including rice, wheat and cotton, and particularly in tissue culture recalcitrant crops, such as chickpea and pigeon pea.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how circadian rhythms affect blood clotting and cardiovascular risks in aspirin-treated patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), particularly looking at fluctuations during different times of day.* -
  • Results showed that the R-value, indicating thrombotic risk, was lower during early morning awakening hours compared to other times, and pulse pressure was highest in the morning, suggesting increased risk for thrombotic events when waking up.* -
  • The findings highlight the need to investigate chronotherapy as a potential strategy to reduce clotting and improve health outcomes in high-risk populations, such as diabetics with various cardiovascular risk factors.*

Background: Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are unpaired electron carriers that uncouple oxygen intake by the electron transport chain from ATP production in the inner membrane of the mitochondria. The physiological activities of UCPs have been hotly contested, and the involvement of UCPs in the pathogenesis and progression of diabetes mellitus is among the greatest concerns. UCPs are hypothesised to be triggered by superoxide and then reduce mitochondrial free radical production, potentially protecting diabetes mellitus patients who are experiencing oxidative stress.

The trend of using plant extracts for the synthesis of nanoparticles has increased in recent years due to environmental safety, low cost, simplicity and sustainability of the green route. Moreover, the morphology of NPs can be fine-tuned by applying abiotic factors such as LEDs, which enhance the bio-reduction of the precursor salt and excite phytochemicals during their green synthesis. Considering this, in present study, the green synthesis of AgNPs was carried out using leaf extract under the illumination of red, green, blue, yellow and white LEDs.

Antimicrobial drug resistance poses a significant threat worldwide, hence triggering an urgent situation for developing feasible drugs. 3D-transition metal coordination complexes being multifaceted, offer tremendous potency as drug candidates. However, there are fewer reports on non-toxic and safe transition metal complexes; therefore, we hereby attempted to develop novel copper and vanadium-based therapeutic agents.

In this article, we discussed a one-dimensional bioheat transfer mathematical model that describes the process of temperature distribution in tissue for the multi-layer skin under the step heating generalized boundary condition. The finite difference scheme is used to estimate the temperature profile along with time and distance. We discussed the stability of the numerical scheme and also validated the accuracy of the numerical code by comparing the present results with the previous reference results.

Pneumothorax is a potentially life-threatening condition that can be rapidly and accurately assessed via the lung sliding artefact generated using lung ultrasound (LUS). Access to LUS is challenged by user dependence and shortage of training. Image classification using deep learning methods can automate interpretation in LUS and has not been thoroughly studied for lung sliding.

Background & Objectives: RHD gene typing is highly complex due to homology with RHCE genes. Molecular polymorphism of the RHCE and RHD genes have been characterized among various populations, but no studies have been undertaken among Indians. This study was undertaken to assess the genetic basis of RHD-negative phenotype in Indian blood donor population.

Background: With aging of the global population peripheral arterial disease is increasingly common. Arteriography, computed tomography angiography and magnetic resonance angiography are common modalities used for evaluation of peripheral arterial disease. However, they have limitations of being invasive, costly, limited availability or contraindicated in patients with renal impairment or contrast allergy.

Background: Among patients who present with acute myocardial infarction (MI), 2-6% are found to have non-obstructive coronary arteries (NOCA). Patients with MINOCA are more commonly women and present at a younger age (51-59 years). The influence of sex on adverse event rates remains unclear.

Removable partial dentures are the most common object found in elderly patients presenting with a history of foreign body ingestion. These patients will usually present within a week with complications if the foreign body gets impacted in the gastrointestinal tract. In this case report, we present a rare delayed complication in the form of colonic perforation that presented three years after swallowing a denture, with the emphasis on how to suspect and manage these patients.
