Neurofibromas are benign tumors of peripheral nerve tissue, frequently associated with neurofibromatosis type 1. Their isolated occurrence in the maxillary antrum is rare, with only 6 cases described in the English literature to the best of our knowledge. Primary neurogenic tumors in the maxillary sinus are unusual entities.

The impact of ethanol lock therapy on length of stay and catheter salvage in pediatric catheter-associated bloodstream infection.

Background: Ethanol lock therapy (ELT) with systemic antimicrobial therapy (SAT) is a treatment for catheter-associated bloodstream infections (CABSI). However, its impact on hospital length of stay (LOS) is unknown.

Analysis of an early intervention tibial component for medial osteoarthritis.

Tibial component loosening is an important failure mode in unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) which may be due to the 6-8 mm of bone resection required. To address component loosening and fixation, a new early intervention (EI) design is proposed which reverses the traditional material scheme between femoral and tibial components. The EI design consists of a plastic inlay for the distal femur and a thin metal plate for the proximal tibia.

Plants exposed to salt stress undergo biochemical and morphological changes even at cellular level. Such changes also include activation of antioxidant enzymes to scavenge reactive oxygen species, while morphological changes are determined as deformation of membranes and organelles. Present investigation substantiates this phenomenon for Caralluma tuberculata calli when exposed to NaCl stress at different concentrations.

Detection of micrometastasis in lymph nodes of oral squamous cell carcinoma: A comparative study.

Background: The annual mortality rate from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is over 11,000 worldwide. Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) frequently metastasizes to the regional lymph nodes which are the first site of arrest of tumor cells that have invaded the peritumoral lymphatics, hence the strongest predictor of disease prognosis and outcome.

Aim: The present study aims to compare the efficacy of frozen sections (cryosection), step-serial sectioning conventional H and E staining, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and RT-PCR analysis in detection of lymph node micrometastasis.

Cost-Effectiveness of Infliximab for the Treatment of Acute Exacerbations of Ulcerative Colitis in the Netherlands.

Introduction: Infliximab is registered for the treatment of moderate-to-severe active ulcerative colitis (UC) adult patients who have had an inadequate response, or are intolerant, or have medical contraindications to therapy including corticosteroids and 5-aminosalicylates or thiopurines (6-mercaptopurine [6-MP] or azathioprine [AZA]). The authors estimate the costs and effects and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of infliximab at the licensed dose of 5 mg/kg versus cyclosporine or surgery for the treatment of adult Dutch patients hospitalized with acute exacerbations of UC, refractory to intravenous steroids.

Method: An existing decision analytical model was updated to simulate disease progression of hospitalized UC patients in the Netherlands, refractory to intravenous corticosteroids, and to estimate the costs and benefits associated with infliximab compared to cyclosporine and surgery over a 1-year time horizon.

Chemically stable multilayered covalent organic nanosheets from covalent organic frameworks via mechanical delamination.

A series of five thermally and chemically stable functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs), namely, TpPa-NO2, TpPa-F4, TpBD-(NO2)2, TpBD-Me2, and TpBD-(OMe)2 were synthesized by employing the solvothermal aldehyde-amine Schiff base condensation reaction. In order to complete the series, previously reported TpPa-1, TpPa-2, and TpBD have also been synthesized, and altogether, eight COFs were fully characterized through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform IR (FT-IR) spectroscopy, (13)C solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Depleted TGF-β₁ levels in end stage renal disease patients from North India.

End stage renal disease is a clinical state that extends from chronic renal failure and is marked by an irreversible loss of renal function. TGF-β1 mediated renal fibrosis is a common pathology implicated in this form of kidney disease. In this study circulating protein and mRNA levels of TGF-β1 cytokine were investigated among ESRD patients and respective controls from North India.

Anticancer investigations on Carissa opaca and Toona ciliata extracts against human breast carcinoma cell line.

This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of two ethnobotanically important plant species Carissa opaca and Toona ciliata against cancer cells. Antiproliferative activity of the plant extracts and their fractions was tested against MCF-7 breast cancer cell line using MTT assay. A concentration dependent inhibition was observed for both crude extracts.

Differential effects of route of T-2 toxin exposure on hepatic oxidative damage in mice.

T-2 toxin is the most toxic among mycotoxins and poses a potential health hazard for both humans and animals. At high doses, T-2 toxin can cause shock-like syndrome that can result in death. We evaluated the effect of time course and route of exposure on hepatic oxidative damage in mice and it is only such study so far to compare the effects of dermal and subcutaneous exposure of T-2 toxin.

Microbial contamination of contact lens care accessories and compliance with care regimens in Nepal.

Purpose: To determine the rates of microbial contamination and identify contaminants associated with contact lens (CL) care accessories. To investigate self-reported compliance levels with care of CL accessories and its association with contamination level.

General practitioners' knowledge and approach to chronic kidney disease in Karachi, Pakistan.

Due to lack of adequate number of formally trained nephrologists, many patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are seen by general practitioners (GPs). This study was designed to assess the knowledge of the GPs regarding identification of CKD and its risk factors, and evaluation and management of risk factors as well as complications of CKD. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 232 randomly selected GPs from Karachi during 2011.

A new surgical technique using steel suture for trans-scleral fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses.

Background: A new emerging complication of trans-scleral fixation of posterior chamber (PC) intraocular lens (IOL) with polypropylene suture is high rates of spontaneous dislocation of the IOL due to disintegration or breakage of suture.

Materials: We report a new surgical technique of trans-scleral fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lens (SF PCIOL) with steel suture to eliminate the complication of dislocation of IOL fixed with polypropylene suture in one adult and a child.

Results: We successfully achieved stable fixation and good centration of IOL after SF PCIOL with steel suture in these patient having inadequate posterior capsular support.

New cyclotetrasiloxanes bearing sila-alkyl substituted side chains and their applications as templates for gold nanowires.

New sila-alkyl substituted cyclotetrasiloxanes, [RMe2SiCH2CH2(Me)SiO]4 [R = Ph(1), 2-thienyl(2), 2-furyl(3)] have been synthesized by a hydrosilylation reaction between 2,4,6,8-tetramethyl-2,4,6,8-tetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane, (D4(Vi)) and dimethylphenylsilane/dimethyl-2-thienylsilane/dimethyl-2-furylsilane in the presence of Karstedt's catalyst. X-ray crystallographic studies of 1 and 2 reveal all-trans conformation of the methyl groups bonded to puckered siloxane core and formation of 3D supramolecular assemblies by virtue of intermolecular C-H···π interactions. These siloxanes act as potential templates for expeditious one pot synthesis of gold nanowires of varying aspect ratios which are obtained by reduction of HAuCl4·3H2O with triethylsilane (CHCl3, RT).
