Intestinal Akkermansia muciniphila complements the efficacy of PD1 therapy in MAFLD-related hepatocellular carcinoma.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors are not effective for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD)-hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients, and identifying the key gut microbiota that contributes to immune resistance in these patients is crucial. Analysis using 16S rRNA sequencing reveals a decrease in Akkermansia muciniphila (Akk) during MAFLD-promoted HCC development. Administration of Akk ameliorates liver steatosis and effectively attenuates the tumor growth in orthotopic MAFLD-HCC mouse models.

Reliability of pre-resection ligament tension assessment in imageless robotic assisted total knee replacement.

Background: Ligament tension balance is a major determinant for the success of total knee replacement (TKR). The present study aimed at determining the inter-rater and intra-rater reliability in performing ligament tension assessment using an imageless robotic-assisted TKR.

Methods: Twenty-four knees in 21 patients who received robotic-assisted TKR for end-stage varus osteoarthritis were examined.

Background: The rate of geriatric hip fracture in Hong Kong is increasing steadily and associated mortality in fragility fracture is high. Moreover, fragility fracture patients increase the pressure on hospital bed demand. Hence, this study aims to develop a predictive model on the length of hospital stay (LOS) of geriatric fragility fracture patients using machine learning (ML) techniques.

COVID-19 hip fracture outcomes: The role of Ct values and D-dimer levels?

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused high mortality rates in hip fracture patients, but data for Asian patients are lacking. Whilst Cycle threshold (Ct) values and D-dimer have been reported as predictors of mortality in COVID-19 patients, their prognostic roles in those with concomitant hip fracture remain unknown. The objectives of this study were to i) assess the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 hip fractures patients in the Chinese population, ii) identify risk factors of mortality and complications, and iii) determine the prognostic roles of Ct values and D-dimer levels.

However, treatment protocols vary across clinical settings and a standardized treatment protocol is needed to improve quality of care. We devised a rehabilitation regime which comprised both orthoses and exercises.

Background: The cultural normativeness theory posits that specific parenting behaviors can be interpreted as displays of appropriate parenting in contexts where they are deemed normative. Previous studies suggest high acceptance of physical discipline in Singapore, where strict parenting could be interpreted as care for the child. However, there is a lack of studies on the local prevalence and implications of physical discipline.

Single use Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) system in the management of knee arthroplasty.

Background: Wound complication, skin blister formation in particular, causes devastating consequences after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) tries to improve wound management leading to decrease length of hospital stay and better clinical outcomes. Low body mass index (BMI) could play a part in wound recovery management although lacking evidence.

Long-term survivorship and results in lower limb arthroplasty: a registry-based comparison study.

Introduction: Popularity of joint replacement surgery due to ever aging population surges the demand for a proper national joint registry. Our Chinese University of Hong Kong - Prince of Wales Hospital (CUHK-PWH) joint registry has passed the 30 year. The aims of this study are 1) summarize our territory-wide joint registry which has passed the 30th year since establishment and 2) compare our statistics with other major joint registries.

THY1 (CD90) Maintains the Adherens Junctions in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma via Inhibition of SRC Activation.

We had previously shown that THY1 (CD90) is a tumor suppressor in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and that its down-regulation and loss of expression are associated with tumor metastasis, yet the mechanism leading to such effects remains unknown. In this study we show that tumor invasion could be suppressed by THY1 via adherens junction formation in a few NPC cell lines, and knockdown of THY1 would disrupt this cell-cell adhesion phenotype. Mechanistically, the activity of the SRC family kinase (SFK) member, SRC, and canonical Wnt signaling were dramatically reduced when THY1 was constitutively expressed.

Cross-cultural adaptation, reliability and validity of the Cantonese-Chinese Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT-HK).

Acute lateral ankle sprains are common amongst athletes, and screening is essential in preventing these long-term sequelae. Self-reported questionnaires, such as the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT), may help identify individuals with chronic ankle instability. To date, a Cantonese-Chinese version of the CAIT does not exist.

Understanding the dynamic properties of trees using the motions constructed from multi-beam flash light detection and ranging measurements.

Measuring the three-dimensional motion of trees at every position remains challenging as it requires dynamic measurement technology with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution. Consequently, this study explores the use of a novel multi-beam flash light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor to tackle such a sensing barrier. A framework is proposed to record tree vibrations, to construct the motions of tree skeletons from the point-cloud frames recorded by the LiDAR sensor and to derive the dynamic properties of trees.

Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) is highly correlated with 1-year mortality in hip fracture patients.

Unlabelled: Prevalence of cognitive impairment in hip fractures was 86.5%. MoCA is an independent risk factor of mortality.

Avulsion Fracture of Bicruciate Ligament and Patellar Tendon in Bicruciate-Retaining Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Tibial intercondylar fracture with anterior cruciate ligament avulsion is a unique but rare complication of bicruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty. Here, we describe an even rarer condition that the tibial intercondylar fracture involved bicruciate ligament and partial patellar tendon avulsion fracture resulting in significant clinical instability in a 70-year-old woman, a combination not yet reported in the literature. Dual-energy computed tomography helped characterize the fracture.

The incidence of geriatric hip fractures continues to rise in our aging population and has become a major public health concern globally. The primary outcome of this study was to determine whether Age-adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index (ACCI) is associated with increased fracture-related complications in neck of femur fractures treated by internal fixation. This was a cohort study between January 2014 to June 2018.

Forgotten joint score-12 (FJS-12) has been proved to reduce or even free from ceiling effect. FJS-12 has been translated to different languages.

A community-centric multi-disciplinary education program with the 8-section brocade Tai Chi therapy for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee - a pilot study.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is one of the most common chronic degenerative joint diseases, and a multi-disciplinary approach to educating patients with OA knee are effective in symptoms management. Tai Chi exercise is a novel approach to relieving knee OA symptoms. Combining both educational program and Tai Chi has not yet been explored.

The long-term results of total knee arthroplasty in octogenarian.

With increasing life expectancy and ageing population, more octogenarians would benefit from total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The aim of this study is to evaluate the survivorship of TKA in octogenarian and their long-term outcomes. This was a retrospective review of 67 patients aged above 80 years who had primary TKA performed between 2005 and 2013 at a single centre.
