Desmoplastic variant of ameloblastoma in Chinese patients.

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma is a rare tumour, and we know of only 43 previously reported cases. We report seven Chinese patients (five men and two women) with the desmoplastic variant of ameloblastoma, which makes up 9% of all ameloblastomas diagnosed during the years 1981-1995. The age ranged from 18 to 68 years (mean 43).

Estrogen treatment induces elevated expression of HMG1 in MCF-7 cells.

The high mobility group (HMG) 1 protein is a highly conserved and ubiquitous chromosomal protein found enriched in active chromatin. In this study, we have investigated the effect of estrogen on the expression of the human high mobility group protein HMG1 gene and found that the HMG1 mRNA level in MCF-7 cells was sharply increased 2.5-fold after 30 min of estrogen treatment.

Determination of the solute removal index for urea by using a partial spent dialysate collection method.

In 22 hemodialysis patients, during a dialysis session, the solute removal index (SRI) for urea obtained from the use of a partial spent dialysate collection method was compared with that derived from the use of a total spent dialysate collection technique. The partial spent dialysate collection method was used to harvest a small representative sample of the total spent dialysate. Multidisciplinary management of osteosarcoma: experience in Hong Kong.

All pediatric osteosarcomas treated in our hospital between 1985 and 1995 were reviewed. There were 26 patients, 15 males and 11 females, aged 20 or less at diagnosis. All had limb primaries.

Clinicopathological pattern of pulmonary thromboembolism in Chinese autopsy patients: comparison with Caucasian series.

The clinicopathological data of adult Chinese patients identified to have 'significant pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE)' at autopsy in Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) Hong Kong, from 1990 to 1994 inclusive, were analysed retrospectively. The prevalence of PTE was documented and data were compared with published series of Caucasian patients. The parameters studied included sex-age distribution, associated diseases, symptomatology, site of venous thrombosis, duration of admission and intervals between surgery and death.

Early implantation of multiple spring coils for severe haemolysis after incomplete transcatheter occlusion of persistent arterial duct.

An 18 month old girl with an angiographically measured ductus of 4.5 mm underwent transcatheter occlusion of the persistent arterial duct with a 17 mm Rashkind umbrella and an occluding spring coil. Severe intravascular haemolysis developed 20 hours later.

Acute sporadic non-A, non-B, non-C, non-D, non-D, non-E hepatitis.

Patients presenting with clinical and laboratory features consistent with a diagnosis of acute non-A, non-B hepatitis were evaluated for evidence of hepatitis C or hepatitis E infection and for evidence of severe or prolonged disease. Antibody to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) was detected in 75 of 108 (69%) patients, antibody to hepatitis E virus (anti-HEV) in three patients (3%), and neither antibody in 31 (29%) patients. One patient had both anti-HCV and anti-HEV.

A partial dialysate collection method.

This study validates Ing's partial dialysate collection method, which employs proportionate collection using a side tube capped with a small-gauge plastic needle. The urea nitrogen and creatinine levels of the small representative fraction of spent dialysate collected in the above fashion are undistinguishable from those obtained from the total spent dialysate. The estimated urea nitrogen removed during hemodialysis using this approach is similar to that using the total dialysate collection method; Ing's method is simple and useful in quantifying the dialysis dosage and in its assessment of the nutritional status of patients on hemodialysis.

Peritoneal catheter-related complications: a comparison between hemodialysis and intermittent peritoneal dialysis in the break-in period.

We prospectively monitored the clinical outcome of 89 curled, double-cuff peritoneal catheters (PC) implanted by surgeons over one year. Thirty-six cases (40%) were supported with hemodialysis (HD) (group A) and 53 cases (60%) were supported with weekly intermittent peritoneal dialysis (IPD) (small exchange volume with a cycler) (group B) for four weeks before commencing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). PC-related complications between the two groups were compared.

Biventricular thrombi in diabetic nephrotic syndrome complicated by cerebral embolism.

We present a case of diabetic nephrotic syndrome complicated with cerebral embolism in whom two intracardiac thrombi were found in both right and left ventricles without obvious abnormality echocardiographically. Both thrombi regressed after anticoagulant therapy. This represents an intracardiac thrombotic complication of nephrotic syndrome, presumably with hypercoagulable state as the sole mechanism of intracardiac thrombus formation.

Seasonal variation in the necropsy incidence of pulmonary thromboembolism in Hong Kong.

The seasonal variation in the necropsy incidence of significant pulmonary thromboembolism in Hong Kong was investigated. A total of 3446 adult Chinese necropsies carried out in Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, from 1987 to 1992 showed an overall rate of 3.77% for significant pulmonary thromboembolism.

Pure red cell aplasia associated with thymic lymphoid hyperplasia and secondary erythropoietin resistance.

Systemic disorders, often immune in nature, can sometimes be associated with the presence of thymic pathology. Thymic enlargement due to lymphoid hyperplasia or thymoma is a common occurrence in patients with myasthenia gravis. In patients with pure red cell aplasia, at least 10% to 15% of patients are found to have thymoma, usually of spindle cell or medullary type.

Mesenchymal hamartoma of liver in a man: comparison with cases in infants.

A 53 year old man with a large mesenchymal hamartoma is reported. Only a few bile ducts could be found in the periphery of the lesion and no hepatocytes were identified within the lesion. As far as is known, this is the only adult male patient reported to date.

Expression and cDNA cloning of human HMGI-C phosphoprotein.

The HMGI family contains three members: I, Y and I-C. HMGI and HMGY are alternative splicings of the same gene and are essential transcription factors at several genetic loci. HMGI-C is transcribed from a different gene and is observed only in highly transformed cells.

Determination of hepatitis E virus seroprevalence by using recombinant fusion proteins and synthetic peptides.

Recombinant antigens from hepatitis E virus (HEV) open-reading frames 2 and 3 were expressed in Escherichia coli as cytidine monophosphate-2-keto-3-deoxyoctulosonic acid synthetase (CKS) fusion proteins, purified, and used to develop an EIA for the detection of antibodies. Serologic results were compared with those of previous assays by testing 102 samples from an HEV outbreak in Somalia. This CKS/HEV EIA detected anti-HEV in all 97 sera found reactive previously and in an additional 2 samples, which were shown to be true HEV-positive samples by supplemental peptide and Western blot tests.
