Understanding driver behaviors in varied traffic scenarios is critical to the design of safe and efficient roadways and traffic control device. This research presents an analysis of driver cognitive workload, situation awareness (SA) and performance for three different scenarios, including a standard intersection and contraflow grade-separated intersections (C-GSI) and quadrant GSI (Q-GSI) with lane assignment sign manipulations. The study used a simulator-based driving experiment with application of the NASA Task Load Index and Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique to assess the influence of the scenarios on driver behavioral responses.

Levodopa/carbidopa remains the gold standard for treating Parkinson disease (PD), but chronic pulsatile administration contributes to motor complications. This Phase 1 study used a new immediate-release (IR) formulation of carbidopa/levodopa 25/100 mg that is functionally scored for easy and precise splitting to evaluate the effects on levodopa plasma variability when smaller doses are taken more frequently. These functionally scored tablets were shown to be bioequivalent to carbidopa/levodopa 25-/100-mg IR generic reference tablets.

The present study used in vitro and in vivo stroke models to demonstrate the safety, efficacy, and mechanism of action of adult human bone marrow-derived NCS-01 cells. Coculture with NCS-01 cells protected primary rat cortical cells or human neural progenitor cells from oxygen glucose deprivation. Adult rats that were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion, transiently or permanently, and subsequently received intracarotid artery or intravenous transplants of NCS-01 cells displayed dose-dependent improvements in motor and neurological behaviors, and reductions in infarct area and peri-infarct cell loss, much better than intravenous administration.

A 68-year-old male nursing home resident presented following dislodgement of a percutaneous endoscopic colostomy (PEC) tube originally sited to prevent recurrent sigmoid volvulus. Computed tomography demonstrated tube migration into the lumen of the recto-sigmoid junction, where it remained for 12 days before passing spontaneously. During this period, the patient remained asymptomatic; the residual colocutaneous fistula functioned as a decompressive valve.

Dystrophic cardiac calcinosis (DCC), also called epicardial and myocardial fibrosis and mineralization, has been detected in mice of a number of laboratory inbred strains, most commonly C3H/HeJ and DBA/2J. In previous mouse breeding studies between these DCC susceptible and the DCC-resistant strain C57BL/6J, 4 genetic loci harboring genes involved in DCC inheritance were identified and subsequently termed Dyscalc loci 1 through 4. Here, we report susceptibility to cardiac fibrosis, a sub-phenotype of DCC, at 12 and 20 months of age and close to natural death in a survey of 28 inbred mouse strains.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in A/J mice homozygous for the spontaneous thrombocytopenia and cardiomyopathy (trac) mutation results from a single base pair change in the Abcg5 gene. A similar mutation in humans causes sitosterolemia with high plant sterol levels, hypercholesterolemia, and early onset atherosclerosis. Analyses of CD3+ and Mac-3+ cells and stainable collagen in hearts showed inflammation and myocyte degeneration in A/J-trac/trac mice beginning postweaning and progressed to marked dilative and fibrosing cardiomyopathy by 140 days.

The aim of this study was to make a comparison of the compressive properties of the goat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc to the mandibular condylar cartilage (MCC) and to explore the transversely isotropic biphasic model. Samples taken mediolaterally from three regions of the TMJ disc and MCC were tested in unconfined compression at strain levels ranging from 10% to 50% and then assessed for biochemical content. The results indicated that the TMJ disc exhibits a significantly greater tangent modulus than the MCC from 20% to 50% strain with values ranging from 729 ± 267 to 2413 ± 406 kPa and 363 ± 169 to 1677 ± 538 kPa, respectively (P < .

This study investigates complex effects of parasitoid infection on herbivore diet choice. Specifically, we examine how immunological resistance, parasitoid infection stage, and parasitoid taxonomic identity affect the pharmacophagous behavior of the polyphagous caterpillar, Grammia incorrupta (Arctiidae). Using a combination of lab and field experiments, we test the caterpillar's pharmacophagous response to pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) over the course of parasitoid infection, as well as the effect of dietary PAs on the caterpillar's immunological response.

Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy 2B, Miyoshi myopathy, and distal myopathy of anterior tibialis are severely debilitating muscular dystrophies caused by genetically determined dysferlin deficiency. In these muscular dystrophies, it is the repair, not the structure, of the plasma membrane that is impaired. Though much is known about the effects of dysferlin deficiency in skeletal muscle, little is known about the role of dysferlin in maintenance of cardiomyocytes.

The spontaneous mouse mutation "thrombocytopenia and cardiomyopathy" (trac) causes macrothrombocytopenia, prolonged bleeding times, anemia, leukopenia, infertility, cardiomyopathy, and shortened life span. Homozygotes show a 20-fold decrease in platelet numbers and a 3-fold increase in platelet size with structural alterations and functional impairments in activation and aggregation. Megakaryocytes in trac/trac mice are present in increased numbers, have poorly developed demarcation membrane systems, and have decreased polyploidy.

Two-dimensional assemblies of Au-Pt bimetallic nanoparticles are generated in situ on polyethyleneimmine (PEI) silane functionalized silicon and indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass surfaces. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), UV-Visible spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements reveal the formation of core-shell structure with Au as core and Pt as shell. The core-shell structure is further supported by comparing with the corresponding data of Au nanoparticle assemblies.
