Flexor Digitorum Superficialis Tendon Transfer for Wrist Extension.

Unlabelled: Peripheral nerve injuries are among the most complex conditions facing upper-extremity surgeons. Loss of wrist extension can result in marked limitations, including loss of pinch and grip strength with discoordination of grasp and release. Tendon transfers represent the mainstay of operative treatment and have proven to be an effective method for restoring loss of wrist extension.

Anterior Capsular Reconstruction with Dermal Allograft in Combination With Anatomic Glenohumeral Arthroplasty: A Case Report.

Case: A 43-year-old man with chronic right shoulder pain and dysfunction due to recurrent anterior instability, irreparable subscapularis tear, and glenohumeral arthritis presented to our practice. After workup and counseling, he was treated with anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty augmented by anterior capsular reconstruction using human acellular dermal allograft. At 15 months postoperatively, his forward elevation, external rotation, and internal rotation were 160, 45, and T12, nearly equal to contralateral values.

Bupivacaine Extended-Release Liposomal Injection Versus Bupivacaine HCl for Early Postoperative Pain Control Following Wrist Operations: A Prospective, Randomized Control Trial.

Purpose: This study evaluated pain control after wrist operations using a long-acting local anesthetic, liposomal bupivacaine, compared with the standard local anesthetic, bupivacaine HCl.

Methods: Patients undergoing elective carpometacarpal joint arthroplasty and proximal row carpectomy were eligible. Those meeting inclusion criteria were enrolled before surgery and were randomized to receive an intraoperative injection of liposomal bupivacaine or bupivacaine HCl.

Flexor Tenosynovectomy for Recurrent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Retrospective Case Series of 108 Hands.

The etiology of recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is unclear, and outcomes following secondary surgery in this demographic have been poorer than primary surgery. Fibrosis and hypertrophy have been identified in the flexor tenosynovium in these patients. The authors use flexor tenosynovectomy (FTS) for recurrent CTS after primary carpal tunnel release and present a review of these patients.

Progressive Surgical Autonomy Observed in a Hand Surgery Resident Clinic Model.

Objective: Resident clinics (RCs) are intended to catalyze the achievement of educational milestones through progressively autonomous patient care. However, few studies quantify their effect on competency-based surgical education, and no previous publications focus on hand surgery RCs (HRCs). We demonstrate the achievement of progressive surgical autonomy in an HRC model.

Arthroscopic suture fixation of tibial eminence fractures.

Tibial eminence avulsion fractures are relatively rare injuries, most frequently occurring in skeletally immature patients. Screws or suture fixation can be used, with each offering different potential advantages. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of a suture fixation technique for displaced tibial eminence avulsion fractures using the Rotator Cuff Guide (RCG; Acufex Microsurgical, Mansfield, Massachusetts).

Quercetin blocks caveolae-dependent pro-inflammatory responses induced by co-planar PCBs.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are widespread environmental contaminants, and co-planar PCBs can induce oxidative stress and activation of pro-inflammatory signaling cascades which are associated with atherosclerosis. The majority of the toxicological effects elicited by the co-planar PCB exposure are associated to the activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) and subsequent induction of responsive genes. Previous studies from our group have shown that quercetin, a nutritionally relevant flavonoid can significantly reduce PCB77 induction of oxidative stress and expression of the AHR responsive gene cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1).
