In 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed routine voluntary HIV testing in health care settings to identify the many HIV-infected but undiagnosed persons. Realizing this goal will require primary care providers including internal medicine physicians to order HIV tests routinely. In particular, urban internal medicine trainees who work in high HIV prevalence settings need to adopt this approach.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe conducted a retrospective chart review of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients who died in 1995 and in 1999-2000. We found an increase in the proportion of patients who died from an illness that was not related to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Although there was a decrease in the prevalence of AIDS-defining illnesses, >85% of patients died with CD4 counts of <200 cells/microL.
