Carvedilol (BM14190) is a new compound with combined properties of nonselective beta-adrenoceptor blockade, devoid of ISA, and precapillary vasodilatation. Its acute hemodynamic effects were studied with invasive technique (dye-dilution using Cardio-Green) in 10 patients taking 25 mg orally and noninvasive (fore-arm plethysmography) in 10 patients taking 25 mg and in 10 patients taking 50 mg orally, all with essential hypertension. Significant reductions of systolic and diastolic blood pressures (p less than 0.

The acute and long-term effects on blood pressure and regional haemodynamics (forearm plethysmography) were studied with carvedilol 25 mg b.i.

On placebo therapy a loud noise (105 dBA for 10 min) caused a significant increase in diastolic and mean arterial pressure due to vasoconstriction. There was also a significant increase of vascular resistance in the calf.

Nine fragments were defined by gel filtration and high-pressure liquid chromatography, and characterized with respect to their Mr, amino acid composition and N-terminal amino acid sequence. Approx.

In the presence of cell-bound C3, virus binding was enhanced in EBV genome-carrying lines. An identical effect could be elicited by C3d at one-quarter the weight amount; C3b and methylamine-treated C3 had no effect on virus binding.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the acute and long-term effects on blood pressure and hemodynamics both at rest and during acute exposure to loud noise of drugs with beta-adrenoceptor blocking and vasodilating properties. Prizidilol and carvedilol both act as nonselective beta-blocking and precapillary vasodilating compounds. Prizidilol (200 mg X 2) was compared to propranolol (80 mg X 2) plus hydralazine (25 mg X 2) and showed similar antihypertensive effect in a long-term double-blind randomized trial.

The factor was purified from cobra plasma by affinity chromatography on an anti-CVF gel and was found to consist of a protein composed of two polypeptide chains similar in size to those of human C3. With use of immunoblotting technique, common antigenic determinants were found in the smaller chain of the prepared material and the beta-chain of human C3; the larger chain may display antigenic determinants present in the alpha-chain of human C3.

The procedure is technically simple, noninvasive, and when reactive (negative), a highly reliable predictor of fetal well-being for up to one week. This paper outlines the indications, performance, interpretation, and limits of the non-stress test as a standard evaluative tool for use by family physicians.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA venous cutdown may be required in emergency situations in order to establish an intravenous line. Subclavian vein catheterization is now widely used, but may result in significant complications and is often inappropriate when a safer distal vein cutdown could be performed. Inanimate models can be used to teach this valuable technique and have the advantage of availability for repeated practice.

IPPB is expensive and has been associated with pulmonary infection, pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax, and death. The exact factors involved in the observed effectiveness of IPPB remain undetermined.

While screening for breast carcinoma has been documented as a valuable undertaking, a majority of the studies are concerned with physician examination and the use of xeromammography. BSE as an individual factor has not been adequately studied.

Loud broad band noise (100 dBA for 10 min) was used as the stress stimulus. Exposure to noise caused a significant increase in systolic (7%, p less than 0.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIt has been shown previously that methylamine is incorporated into the alpha-chain of human C4, resulting in a loss of haemolytic function and the appearance of a free thiol group in the molecule. In the present study it was demonstrated that a fragment resembling C4d is liberated from C4 by trypsin. The fragment--Try-C4d--contains both the methylamine binding site and the free thiol group.
