Background: Low-profile double plating seems a viable alternative to conventional single plating for fixation of midshaft clavicle fractures. This study aims to compare the two techniques regarding healing, complications, and removal rate.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included all patients >16 years that underwent plate fixation for midshaft clavicle fractures between 2020 and 2022 at one trauma-center.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of fetuses who had open fetal spina bifida surgery in Canada, collecting data on treatment needs and various developmental aspects post-surgery.
  • A total of 41 fetuses underwent the procedure from 2017 to 2022, with 24 providing follow-up data at a median age of 46.5 months; results revealed mixed outcomes including a significant need for bladder management and varied motor skills.
  • The findings highlighted that while many children displayed typical communication and problem-solving abilities, a majority faced delays in gross motor development, reflecting similar results to previous studies like the MOMs trial.

Study Design: Systematic review.

Objectives: To determine if the natural experiment design is a useful research methodology concept in spinal trauma care, and to determine if this methodology can be a viable alternative when randomized controlled trials are either infeasible or unethical.

Methods: A Medline, Embase and Cochrane database search was performed between 2004 and 2023 for studies comparing different treatment modalities of spinal trauma.

Patients with rib fractures are a heterogenous group of patients who are treated by general practitioners as well as by specialized trauma surgeons. We present three patients with rib fractures with different degrees of thoracic trauma and therefore treatments differ significantly. The cornerstone in the treatment of rib fractures remains attaining adequate analgesia and breathing exercises.

Introduction: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on the incidence of secondary tethered spinal cord (TSC) between prenatal and postnatal closure in patients with MMC. The objectives was to understand the incidence of secondary TSC after prenatal surgery for MMC compared to postnatal surgery for MMC.

Material And Methods: On May 4, 2023, a systematic search was conducted in Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Library to gather relevant data.

Objective: Ten years ago, the authors reported on the outcome of their study investigating the degree of discomfort and pain in newborns with myelomeningocele (MMC), using the parameters of unbearable and hopeless suffering. In the current study, they investigated the quality of life, daily functioning, pain and fatigue, ability to communicate, and number of surgeries in the same cohort of patients. They subdivided their study population into severe (Lorber) and less severe (non-Lorber) cases and compared these cases with a healthy population (non-MMC group) and with each other.

Background: Classic randomized controlled trials (RCTs) form the cornerstone for medical guidelines and protocols. However, in neurosurgery, RCTs are not always applicable to everyday clinical practice. Pragmatic controlled trials aim to incorporate real-life data with the preservation of the methodologic quality.

Objectives: Previous literature showed that the diagnostic accuracy of computed tomographic angiography (CTA) is not equally comparable with that of the rarely used golden standard of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for detecting blunt cerebrovascular injuries (BCVI) in trauma patients. However, advances in CTA technology may prove CTA to become equally accurate. This study investigated the diagnostic accuracy of CTA in detecting BCVI in comparison with DSA in trauma patients.
