Aim: The impact of personal protective equipment (PPE) on resuscitation quality is largely unknown. We sought to examine the effect of PPE requirements on CPR quality and resuscitation interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic in Victoria, Australia.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of adult OHCA patients of medical aetiology who received attempted resuscitation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looks at a new method to help control heavy bleeding in trauma patients, using a special balloon to block blood flow temporarily.
  • It compares this method with regular care to see which one is better at keeping patients alive after serious injuries.
  • The research involves patients in major hospitals in the UK and checks various health outcomes over time to find out the best approach for treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • - Low testosterone levels in men lead to hypogonadism, characterized by sexual dysfunction, fatigue, and decreased muscle strength, and testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is a common treatment despite concerns about its safety and effectiveness on cardiovascular health.
  • - The research aimed to investigate the safety and cost-effectiveness of TRT for men with hypogonadism, while also exploring men's personal experiences with the treatment.
  • - A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, evaluating data from multiple studies, to assess primary outcomes like mortality and cardiovascular events, ultimately creating a model to analyze the economic benefits of TRT in improving quality of life.

Background: Peripheral artery disease is a common condition caused by narrowing/blockage of the arteries, resulting in reduced blood supply. Peripheral artery disease is associated with an increased risk of vascular complications, but early treatment reduces mortality and morbidity. Leg ulcers are long-lasting wounds, usually treated by compression therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • * Findings revealed that the average cost per asthma attack was £297, with a total annual cost to the NHS averaging £1,086, exacerbated by factors like age and severity of the condition.
  • * Results indicate that pediatric asthma creates a substantial economic burden, highlighting the potential for cost savings through better asthma management and fewer attacks.

Importance: Bleeding is the most common cause of preventable death after trauma.

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) when used in the emergency department along with standard care vs standard care alone on mortality in trauma patients with exsanguinating hemorrhage.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Pragmatic, bayesian, randomized clinical trial conducted at 16 major trauma centers in the UK.

Aim: We sought to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence and survival outcomes of emergency medical service (EMS)-witnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in Victoria, Australia.

Methods: We performed an interrupted time-series analysis of adult EMS-witnessed OHCA patients of medical aetiology. Patients treated during the COVID-19 period (1st March 2020 to 31st December 2021) were compared to a historical comparator period (1st January 2012 and 28th February 2020).

Background: Neovascular age-related macular degeneration is a leading cause of sight loss, and early detection and treatment is important. For patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration in one eye, it is usual practice to monitor the unaffected eye. The test used to diagnose neovascular age-related macular degeneration, fundus fluorescein angiography, is an invasive test.

Background: The benefit of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) in guiding asthma treatment is uncertain. We evaluated the efficacy of adding FeNO to symptom-guided treatment in children with asthma versus only symptom-guided treatment.

Methods: RAACENO was a multicentre, parallel, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial done in 35 secondary care centres and 17 primary care recruitment sites (only seven primary care sites managed to recruit patients) in the UK.

Background/aims: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of non-invasive monitoring tests to detect the onset of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) in the unaffected second eye of patients receiving treatment for unilateral nAMD in a UK National Health Service (NHS) hospital outpatient setting.

Methods: A patient-level state transition model was constructed to simulate the onset, detection, and treatment of nAMD in the second eye. Five index tests were compared: self-reported change in visual function, Amsler test, clinic measured change in visual acuity from baseline, fundus assessment by clinical examination or colour photography, and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).

Objective: Capnography is a key monitoring intervention in several neurologically vulnerable clinical states. Cerebral autoregulation (CA) describes the ability of the cerebrovascular system to maintain a near constant cerebral blood flow throughout fluctuations in systemic arterial blood pressure, with the partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide known to directly influence CA. Previous work has demonstrated dysautoregulation lasting around 30 s prior to the anticipated augmentation of hyperventilation-associated hypocapnia.
