Background: Following the widespread shift from in-person to virtual delivery of didactics during the COVID-19 pandemic, some emergency medicine (EM) residency programs have retained virtual didactic time while others have returned exclusively to in-person didactics. In this national survey of EM residency programs, we explored the current national distribution of virtual versus in-person didactic time and the circumstances and motivators for use of each.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey with branched logic was designed via Qualtrics.

Application of ultrasound to evaluate pediatric respiratory disease in the emergency department setting is rapidly growing, particularly as we often weigh the risks of exposure to radiation with other readily available imaging modalities in the acute care setting. In this case report, we describe how point of care ultrasound (POCUS) was utilized by emergency providers to characterize a lung abscess diagnosed in a pediatric patient. We also compare the ultrasound findings to other imaging studies.

Introduction: While many studies have been published on Ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia in the Emergency Department (ED), there has been no previous study assessing the current state of the literature based in the form of a scoping review.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current state of the literature on UGRA performed in the ED setting.

Methods: EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Cochrane databases were searched for studies.

Article Synopsis
  • Bedside ultrasound imaging is increasingly used in emergency medicine and critical care transport, with a training program for flight nurses starting at the University of Michigan in 2014.
  • Nurses have learned essential procedures, such as pericardiocentesis, which allows them to perform lifesaving interventions with online or offline guidance.
  • The report discusses two cases of ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis for patients experiencing tamponade from type A aortic dissection, highlighting the controversial aspects of this procedure.

Objectives: There is no standardized protocol for performing educational point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) that addresses patient-centered ethical issues such as obtaining informed consent. This study sought to define principles for ethical application of educational POCUS and develop consensus-based best practice guidance.

Methods: A questionnaire was developed by a trained ethicist after literature review with the help of a medical librarian.

Introduction: Residency didactic conferences transitioned to a virtual format during the COVID-19 pandemic. This format creates questions about effective educational practices, which depend on learner engagement. In this study we sought to characterize the competitive demands for learner attention during virtual didactics and to pilot methodology for future studies.

Study Objective: Senior (geriatric) emergency departments (EDs) are an emerging phenomenon across the United States, designed to provide greater comfort for elders, screening for common morbidities, and selective contact with social workers. We hypothesize that the senior ED will reduce recidivism, rate of admission, and hospital length of stay.

Methods: This was a pre/postintervention observational study of seniors (≥65 years) before and after opening of a new senior ED in a large community hospital.
