In this paper, we present a solution for creating robust monolithic achromatic half-wave plates (HWPs) for the infrared, based on the form birefringence of subwavelength gratings (SWGs) made out of diamond. We use the rigorous coupled wave analysis to design the gratings. Our analysis shows that diamond, besides its outstanding physical and mechanical properties, is a suitable substrate to manufacture mid-infrared HWPs, thanks to its high refractive index, which allows etching SWGs with lower aspect ratio.

Article Synopsis
  • A new type of phase shifter is proposed for infrared nulling interferometry, using optimized Fresnel rhombs that take advantage of total internal reflection to achieve the necessary phase shifts.
  • This phase shifting aims to improve the destructive interference needed to separate closely spaced objects in imaging.
  • The design also includes methods to compensate for material dispersion, ensuring that the phase shifts remain consistent across a wide range of wavelengths, using techniques like thin films or subwavelength gratings, with initial prototypes showing promising results.
