Background: Given the rise in music therapy master's programs that offer dual degrees in music therapy and counseling or programs that satisfy state mental health counseling licensure laws, the professional counseling field is playing an increased role in the advanced education and professional practices of music therapists.

Purpose: The evolution of sterile compounding in the context of hospital patient care, the evolution of related technology, past incidents of morbidity and mortality associated with preparations compounded in various settings, and efforts over the years to improve compounding practices are reviewed.

Summary: Tightened United States Pharmacopeial Convention standards (since 2004) for sterile compounding made it difficult for hospitals to achieve all of the sterile compounding necessary for patient care. Shortages of manufactured injections added to the need for compounding.

Successful Treatment of Advanced Metastatic Prostate Cancer following Chemotherapy Based on Molecular Profiling.

After Taxotere fails, treatment options for metastatic prostate cancer are limited. The three drugs with FDA approval in this setting, Jevtana, Provenge and Zytiga, are associated with median survivals of less than 2 years. In part, the impact on survival is the result of low response rates, indicating a significant proportion of patients exhibiting de novo resistance to these agents.

MK591, a leukotriene biosynthesis inhibitor, induces apoptosis in prostate cancer cells: synergistic action with LY294002, an inhibitor of phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase.

MK591 is a synthetic compound which specifically inhibits the activity of 5-Lox and is currently under development for the treatment of asthma. We observed that human prostate cancer cells treated with MK591 undergo apoptosis within hours of treatment. Apoptosis involves severe morphological alteration, externalization of phosphatidyl-serine, cleavage of PARP, and degradation of chromatin-DNA.
