Glutathione reductase (GR) catalyzes the reduction of glutathione disulfide (GSSG) to glutathione. As selenium is a congener of sulfur, the possibility of reducing selenenyl sulfide (RSeSG) at the catalytic site of GR has been investigated using density functional theory. Calculations on the redox potential and the Se-S bond strength of some studied RSeSG compounds with a phenyl selenide backbone suggested that the unsubstituted and amine-based selenenyl sulfide intermediates could have a promising tendency to be reduced at the catalytic site of GR.

Context: In this study, we have developed four new chromophores (TM1-TM4) and performed quantum chemical calculations to explore their nonlinear optical properties. Our focus was on understanding the impact of electron-donating substituents on 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivative chromophores. A naphthalenediimide (NDI)-based highly potential chemosensor for the detection of cyanide has been synthesized successfully in several steps. The NDI-based probe displayed high selectivity and sensitivity towards cyanide ions in fluorescence 'turn-off' mode over other ions used in this study. The naked-eye, UV-vis absorbance and fluorescence methods are employed to investigate the sensing performance of probe 1 toward CN ion detection.

Improved throughput of analysis and lowered limits of detection have allowed single-cell chemical analysis to go beyond the detection of a few molecules in such volume-limited samples, enabling researchers to characterize different functional states of individual cells. Image-guided single-cell mass spectrometry leverages optical and fluorescence microscopy in the high-throughput analysis of cellular and subcellular targets. Thermal and temporal stability of the methane hydrates (MH) at ambient pressure, synthesised in a spherical silica (solid and hollow, with average diameter of 70 μm) matrix, are investigated by the Raman spectroscopy. Identical Raman spectroscopic spectral features for all the synthesized hydrate samples indicate structural resemblance irrespective of matrix. It is observed that the growth of hydrates in hollow silica matrix is homogeneous, while that with solid grain is highly heterogeneous.

Retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARα) selective compounds may guide the design of drugs that can be used in conjunction with hormonal adjuvant therapy in the treatment of breast cancer. Herein we report a modified synthesis of a known RARα antagonist, 2-fluoro-4-[[[8-bromo-2,2-dimethyl-4-(4-methylphenyl)chroman-6-yl]carbonyl]amino]benzoic acid and a synthesis of its unknown, desfluoro analog, 4-[[[8-bromo-2,2-dimethyl-4-(4-methylphenyl)chroman-6-yl]carbonyl]amino]benzoic acid. The modified route allows for facile reaction workups, increased yields, lower cost and incorporates a green alternative step.

A 42-year-old man presented with acute left hemiplegia due to a right frontotemporal hemorrhagic stroke and left-sided pain. While the initial presentation suggested central poststroke pain, subsequent investigations also implicated heterotopic ossification of the left hip and amplification of previous low back pain by the new central pain. While heterotopic ossification has been commonly associated with brain injury, spinal cord injury or osseous injury, it is only rarely associated with stroke.

We investigated the effect of UV-B irradiation on PI 3-kinase activity in human fetal hepatocytes. When cells were exposed to monochromatic (304nm) UV-B light, a significant increase in intracellular PI 3-kinase activity was observed in a dose dependent manner with maximal activity upon 1500 Jm(-2) irradiation. At 1500 Jm(-2) dose PI 3-kinse activity increased by 80% in membrane fraction of fetal hepatocytes of 25 weeks gestation.

Background: After more than a decade of growth for laparoscopic cholecystectomy and decline in open cholecystectomy, the impact on the training of resident's in other open biliary operations can be analyzed quantitatively.

Methods: The national operative statistics for residents' operations from 1988 to 2001 (data in the public domain) were analyzed by regression analysis to establish trends and to calculate the rate of change. For laparoscopic biliary operations, the changes in laparoscopic and open operations over time and the number of operations per trainee each year were used to measure the growth of a laparoscopic operation and to predict future trends.
