This study investigates the role of Zero-Valent Iron (ZVI) in anaerobic digestion, emphasizing the critical influence of bicarbonate and feeding regimes. Abiotic tests revealed that higher bicarbonate concentrations enhanced hydrogen production. However, two-cycle experiments with ZVI and bicarbonate showed reduced hydrogen in the second cycle due to ZVI passivation.

Objectives: The aim for this pilot study was to investigate the effect of a sodium fluoride varnish on step height measured by a profilometer from human enamel worn by healthy volunteers with a novel in situ/ex vivo erosion design.

Method: Healthy volunteers aged 18-70 years wore a palatal splint containing 8 human enamel samples and underwent two 3-day treatment periods for 6 h a day with a varnish containing sodium fluoride at 22,600 ppm and the control with the same ingredients but without fluoride. We show that perturbations of massless fields in a black hole background enjoy a hidden SL(2,R)×U(1) ("Love") symmetry in the properly defined near zone approximation. Cheese whey is an easily biodegradable substrate with high organic matter that can be anaerobically digested to biogas; however, the process is often inhibited by excess acidification due to the presence of undissociated volatile fatty acids and requires considerable concentration of alkaline buffer. The current study investigates a new approach for biogas upgrading, and increase of total CH in conjunction with buffering acidification by using zero-valent iron (powder and scrap metals at concentrations 25, 50, and 100 g/L) in anaerobic granular sludge and cheese whey under mesophilic batch conditions. During the first 2 cycles (total 34 days), a high performance was found in anaerobic bottles with 25 g/L powder zero valent iron (PZVI) and 50 g/L scrap zero valent iron (SZVI) since they had a higher total CH production compared to anaerobic bottles free of ZVI, as well as 97% CH composition in produced biogas compared to 74% CH for anaerobic bottles free of ZVI.

Objectives: To describe and explore differences in formal regulations around sick leave and work disability (WD) for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as well as perceptions by rheumatologists and patients on the system's performance, across European countries.

Methods: We conducted three cross-sectional surveys in 50 European countries: one on work (re-)integration and social security (SS) system arrangements in case of sick leave and long-term WD due to RA (one rheumatologist per country), and two among approximately 15 rheumatologists and 15 patients per country on perceptions regarding SS arrangements on work participation. Differences in regulations and perceptions were compared across categories defined by gross domestic product (GDP), type of social welfare regime, European Union (EU) membership and country RA WD rates.

Purpose: Ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury damages retinal neurons. Retinal injury is accompanied by activation of microglia, which scavenge the dead or dying neurons, but increasing evidence now indicates that amoeboid-shaped microglia cells activated in the brain after ischemia have neurotoxic and damaging properties in their own right. Exploring the dynamics of matter driven to extreme non-equilibrium states by an intense ultrashort X-ray pulse is becoming reality, thanks to the advent of free-electron laser technology that allows development of different schemes for probing the response at variable time delay with a second pulse. Here we report the generation of two-colour extreme ultraviolet pulses of controlled wavelengths, intensity and timing by seeding of high-gain harmonic generation free-electron laser with multiple independent laser pulses. The potential of this new scheme is demonstrated by the time evolution of a titanium-grating diffraction pattern, tuning the two coherent pulses to the titanium M-resonance and varying their intensities.

Growth/differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) is a distant member of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily and is ubiquitously expressed in the central nervous system. It is prominently upregulated in cerebral cortical and ischemic lesion paradigms. GDF-15 robustly promotes the survival of lesioned nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons in vivo; GDF-15-deficient mice exhibit progressive postnatal motor and sensory neuron losses implying essential functions of GDF-15 in neuronal survival.

The growth/differentiation factor-15, GDF-15, has been found to be secreted by Schwann cells in the lesioned peripheral nervous system. To investigate whether GDF-15 plays a role in peripheral nerve regeneration, we substituted exogenous GDF-15 into 10-mm sciatic nerve gaps in adult rats and compared functional and morphological regeneration to a vehicle control group. Over a period of 11 weeks, multiple functional assessments, including evaluation of pinch reflexes, the Static Sciatic Index and of electrophysiological parameters, were performed.
