An understanding of insect olfaction allows for more specific alternative methods of pest control. We evaluated the responses of the western flower thrips (WFT, ) in a Y-olfactometer to estimate gas-phase concentrations of the aggregation pheromone neryl ()-2-methylbutanoate and known kairomones such as methyl isonicotinate, ()-(-)-verbenone, and -anisaldehyde. The gas-phase concentrations of these compounds were obtained from the release rates measured in dynamic headspace cells.

The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Mastectomy Outcomes for Breast Cancer.

Background: Single center studies have shown that during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, many patients had surgical procedures postponed or modified. We studied how the pandemic affected the clinical outcomes of breast cancer patients who underwent mastectomies in 2020.

Methods: Using the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database, we compared clinical variables of 31,123 and 28,680 breast cancer patients who underwent a mastectomy in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

Simulating latrine conditions to assess perfume performance against malodour.

To evaluate perfume performance in toilets, we built model toilets in which critical factors such as background malodour, climate, and airflow were controlled. The models were equipped with an odour generator that injected hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, butyric acid, para-cresol, and indole, allowing us to accurately and reliably reconstitute toilet malodour headspace. The malodorant concentrations matched the quantitative headspace analysis performed in African and Indian toilets.

1.15 PW-850 J compressed beam demonstration using the PETAL facility.

The Petawatt Aquitaine Laser (PETAL) facility was designed and constructed by the French Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA) as an additional PW beamline to the Laser MegaJoule (LMJ) facility. PETAL energy is limited to 1 kJ at the beginning due to the damage threshold of the final optics. In this paper, we present the commissioning of the PW PETAL beamline.

Optical vortices are currently one of the most intensively studied topics in optics. These light beams, which carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), have been successfully utilized in the visible and infrared in a wide variety of applications. Moving to shorter wavelengths may open up completely new research directions in the areas of optical physics and material characterization.

Identification of Hydrogen Disulfanes and Hydrogen Trisulfanes in HS Bottle, in Flint, and in Dry Mineral White Wine.

Through the accidental contamination of a gas cylinder of HS, the importance of polysulfanes for flint, gun powder, and match odors was discovered. The hydrogen disulfane was prepared from disulfanediylbis[methyl(diphenyl)silane], and its odor descriptor was evaluated in the gas phase from a gas chromatograph coupled to an olfaction port. The occurrence of this compound in flint and pebbles was confirmed by analyses after derivatization with pentafluorobromobenzene.

Quantitative headspace analysis of selected odorants from latrines in Africa and India.

This analytical investigation focuses on the quantification of odorant molecules in the headspace of latrines. Hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan were derivatized under a more stable N-ethyl maleimide conjugate. Since the amount of odorant molecules is very low in the gas phase, we developed a method that had two steps of concentration.

Water vapour and heat combine to elicit biting and biting persistence in tsetse.

Background: Tsetse flies are obligatory blood feeders, accessing capillaries by piercing the skin of their hosts with the haustellum to suck blood. However, this behaviour presents a considerable risk as landing flies are exposed to predators as well as the host's own defense reactions such as tail flicking. Achieving a successful blood meal within the shortest time span is therefore at a premium in tsetse, so feeding until replete normally lasts less than a minute.

An extended phase II trial of iodine-125 methylene blue for sentinel lymph node identification in women with breast cancer.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine if an intraoperative injection of iodine-125-labeled methylene blue ((125)I-MB) is a sensitive and effective method for detecting SLNs in women with breast cancer.

Study Design: Sixty-two women were enrolled in an extended phase II trial using (125)I-MB to guide SLNB. All patients were anesthetized and then injected subcutaneously with 1 mCi (125)I-MB in the outer quadrant of the areola.

Sex differences in recovery from PTSD in male and female interpersonal assault survivors.

Men and women differ in exposure to trauma and the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD); however, research regarding sex differences in recovery from PTSD has been sparse. This study evaluated the treatment response trajectory for 69 male and female interpersonal assault survivors, using a modified Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) protocol that allowed survivors to receive up to18 sessions of CPT, with treatment end determined by therapy progress. Few sex differences were observed in trauma history, baseline PTSD and depressive severity, Axis I comorbidity, anger, guilt and dissociation.

Engineering of a broad-specificity antibody: detection of eight fluoroquinolone antibiotics simultaneously.

Recombinant sarafloxacin-recognizing antibody was engineered with the use of novel fluoroquinolone (FQ) derivatives. A monoclonal FQ antibody, 6H7, was targeted to random mutagenesis to broaden the specificity of the antibody in development of a generic assay for FQ antibiotics. Engineering involved the synthesis of different small-sized FQ molecules to immobilize and detect the mutant antibodies.

Experimental demonstration of a synthetic aperture compression scheme for multi-Petawatt high-energy lasers.

We present the experimental demonstration of a subaperture compression scheme achieved in the PETAL (PETawatt Aquitaine Laser) facility. We evidence that by dividing the beam into small subapertures fitting the available grating size, the sub-beam can be individually compressed below 1 ps, synchronized below 50 fs and then coherently added thanks to a segmented mirror.

Background: Understanding the correlates of dietary intake is necessary in order to effectively promote healthy dietary behavior among children and adolescents. A literature review was conducted on the correlates of the following categories of dietary intake in children and adolescents: Fruit, Juice and Vegetable Consumption, Fat in Diet, Total Energy Intake, Sugar Snacking, Sweetened Beverage Consumption, Dietary Fiber, Other Healthy Dietary Consumption, and Other Less Healthy Dietary Consumption in children and adolescents.

Methods: Cross-sectional and prospective studies were identified from PubMed, PsycINFO and PsycArticles by using a combination of search terms.

Impaired glutathione synthesis in schizophrenia: convergent genetic and functional evidence.

Schizophrenia is a complex multifactorial brain disorder with a genetic component. Convergent evidence has implicated oxidative stress and glutathione (GSH) deficits in the pathogenesis of this disease. The aim of the present study was to test whether schizophrenia is associated with a deficit of GSH synthesis.

Hemodynamics optimization during off-pump coronary artery bypass: the 'no compression' technique.

Objective: Heart manipulation during OPCAB may cause hemodynamical instability in particular for access to the posterior and lateral walls. The 'no compression' technique involves enucleation of the heart without any compression on the cavities, and stabilization of the target area with a suction device. The impact of this technique on hemodynamics is assessed.

Prospective, multicenter study of laparoscopic ventral hernioplasty. Preliminary results.

Background: A standard technique for laparoscopic ventral hernioplasty (peritoneal onlay using an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene [ePTFE] patch for hernias >/=4 cm2) is being used in a prospective, multicenter, long-term study.

Methods: Demographic, operative, and postoperative data were collected and analyzed. Follow-up clinical evaluations were conducted 7-10 days, 4 weeks, 6 months, 1 year, and then annually after surgery in all patients.
