Effects of Social Determinants of Health and Social Support on Surgical Outcomes Among Patients Undergoing Hysterectomy.

Objective: To describe composite 30-day postoperative complication rates among patients undergoing hysterectomy during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and to determine baseline and postoperative mental health symptoms, levels of social support, and socioeconomic status and their association with hysterectomy outcomes.

Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study at eight centers across the United States enrolled patients who underwent minimally invasive hysterectomy for benign indications during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients completed preoperative and postoperative surveys assessing mental health (PHQ-9 [Patient Health Questionnaire]), social support (MOS-SS [Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey]), and socioeconomic status (Hollingshead Index [Hollingshead Four Factor Index of Socioeconomic Status]).

Hip contact force pathways in total hip replacement differ between patients and activities of daily living.

One of the main causes of implant failure and revision surgery in total hip replacement (THR) is aseptic loosening often caused by the accumulation of wear debris arising between the contact surfaces of the acetabular cup and femoral head during activities of daily living (ADL's). However, limited information is available regarding the contact force pathways between these two surfaces during specific ADL's. In this study, through musculoskeletal modelling, we aimed to estimate the orientation of the hip contact force pathway on the acetabular cup.

A Concept for Preoperative and Intraoperative Molecular Imaging and Detection for Assessing Extent of Disease of Solid Tumors.

The authors propose a concept of "systems engineering," the approach to assessing the extent of diseased tissue (EODT) in solid tumors. We modeled the proof of this concept based on our clinical experience with colorectal carcinoma (CRC) and gastrinoma that included short and long-term survival data of CRC patients. This concept, applicable to various solid tumors, combines resources from surgery, nuclear medicine, radiology, pathology, and oncology needed for preoperative and intraoperative assessments of a patient's EODT.

Using machine learning to unveil relevant predictors of adherence to recommended health-protective behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic in Denmark.

What were relevant predictors of individuals' proclivity to adhere to recommended health-protective behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic in Denmark? Applying machine learning (namely, lasso regression) to a repeated cross-sectional survey spanning 10 months comprising 25 variables (Study 1; N = 15,062), we found empathy toward those most vulnerable to COVID-19, knowledge about how to protect oneself from getting infected, and perceived moral costs of nonadherence to be strong predictors of individuals' self-reported adherence to recommended health-protective behaviors. We further explored the relations between these three factors and individuals' self-reported proclivity for adherence to recommended health-protective behaviors as they unfold between and within individuals over time in a second study, a Danish panel study comprising eight measurement occasions spanning eight months (N = 441). Results of this study suggest that the relations largely occurred at the trait-like interindividual level, as opposed to at the state-like intraindividual level.

Defining cis-regulatory elements and transcription factors that control human cortical interneuron development.

Although human cortical interneurons (cINs) are a minority population in the cerebral cortex, disruption of interneuron development is a frequent contributor to neurodevelopmental disorders. Here, we utilized a model for deriving cINs from human embryonic stem cells to profile chromatin state changes and generate an atlas of -regulatory elements (CREs) controlling human cIN development. We used these data to define candidate transcription factors (TFs) that may bind these CREs to regulate interneuron progenitor specification.

Background: The 'PenCS Flu Topbar' app was deployed in Central Queensland (CQ), Australia, medical practices through a pilot programme in March 2021.

Methods: We evaluated the app's user experience and examined whether the introduction of 'PenCS Flu Topbar' in medical practices could improve the coverage of NIP-funded influenza vaccinations. We conducted a mixed-method study including a qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with key end-users and a quantitative analysis of influenza vaccine administrative data.

The method of foot shape capture used to produce insoles varies throughout orthotic services. This trial aims to investigate the effectiveness of two common shape-capture techniques on patient-reported outcomes in people who require insoles for a foot or ankle pathology.

Dynamic Acetabular Cup Orientation during Gait: A Study of Fast- and Slow-Walking Total Hip Replacement Patients.

The dynamic orientation of total hip replacement acetabular cups during walking may vary substantially from their assumed position at surgical implantation and may vary between individuals. The scale of this effect is of interest for both pre-clinical device testing and for pre-operative surgical planning. This work aimed to evaluate (1) patient variation in dynamic cup orientation; (2) whether walking speed was a candidate proxy measure for the dynamic cup orientation; and (3) the relationships between dynamic cup orientation angles and planar pelvic angles.

Restrictive opioid prescribing after surgery for prolapse and incontinence: a randomized, noninferiority trial.

Background: Opioids are routinely prescribed for postoperative pain control after gynecologic surgery with growing evidence showing that most prescribed opioids go unused. Restrictive opioid prescribing has been implemented in other surgical specialties to combat the risk for opioid misuse and diversion.
