A rare presentation of glycogenic acanthosis on the lips: A case report.

Glycogenic acanthosis (GA) is a benign, asymptomatic condition commonly found in the lower third of the esophagus. This case report presents a unique occurrence of GA on the lips of a 55-year-old male smoker, who exhibited asymptomatic white lesions on his upper and lower lips for many years. Physical examination revealed multiple white papules on the wet-dry vermilion border of the lips.

In-depth Characterization of S-Glutathionylation in Ventricular Myosin Light Chain 1 Across Species by Top-Down Proteomics.

S-glutathionylation (SSG) is increasingly recognized as a critical signaling mechanism in the heart, yet SSG modifications in cardiac sarcomeric proteins remain understudied. Here we identified SSG of the ventricular isoform of myosin light chain 1 (MLC-1v) in human, swine, and mouse cardiac tissues using top-down mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics. Our results enabled the accurate identification, quantification, and site-specific localization of SSG in MLC-1v across different species.

Peer relationships are critical in the development of positive mental health during childhood and adolescence. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms can adversely affect the development of positive peer relationships, and thus, have significant long-term implications for mental health. This study explored the long-term relationships between ADHD symptoms, peer relationships and mental health in Western Australian adolescents.

Purpose: Meningiomas are central nervous system tumors whose incidence increases with age. Benign meningioma pathogenesis involves germline or somatic mutation of target genes, such as NF2, leading to clonal expansion. We used an established cancer epidemiology model to investigate the number of rate-limiting steps sufficient for benign meningioma development.

Validity of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for Screening and Diagnosis in Western Australian Adolescents.

Background/objectives: The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a widely used 25-item screening and diagnostic tool for behavioral and emotional problems in young people. Despite its popularity, evaluations of the SDQ's factor structure in adolescent populations have produced disparate results, and its relationships with theoretically related variables are rarely evaluated. In the present study, these two elements of validity were evaluated based on a large sample of Western Australian adolescents.

Airborne microplastic monitoring: Developing a simplified outdoor sampling approach using pollen monitoring equipment.

A novel, yet simple, airborne microplastic (MP) sampling approach using global pollen monitoring equipment was applied to identify, characterise and quantify outdoor airborne MPs for the first time. Modification of Burkard spore trap tape adhesive provided particle capture and facilitated downstream spectroscopy analysis. 36 polymer types were identified from a total of 21 days sampling using Burkard spore traps at two locations (United Kingdom and South Africa).

Molecular identification of predation on the Dubas bug (Hemiptera: Tropiduchidae) in Oman date palms: density-dependent response to prey.

The date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) (Arecales: Arecaceae) is the most economically important crop in Oman with an annual production of >360,000 tons of fruit. The Dubas bug (Ommatissus lybicus de Bergevin) (Hemiptera: Tropiduchidae) is one of the major pests of date palms, causing up to a 50% reduction in fruit production.

In this study, a brief measure of four internal attributes found to protect against the impact of adverse life events on mental health was developed and validated. In addition, profiles of internal strengths that significantly predict mental health outcomes in young Chinese adults were identified. The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses on data from 831 Chinese university students supported the proposed four-factor model of the ISALES.

Specific target RNAs play critical roles in neurodevelopment, including the regulation of neurite morphogenesis, synaptic plasticity, and cognitive function.

Updating a conceptual model of effective symptom management in palliative care to include patient and carer perspective: a qualitative study.

Background: A conceptual model of effective symptom management was previously developed from interviews with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals (HCP) working in English hospices. Here we aimed to answer the question; does a HCP data-derived model represent the experience of patients and carers of people with advanced cancer?

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with six patients with advanced cancer and six carers to gain an in-depth understanding of their experience of symptom management. Analysis was based on the framework method; transcription, familiarisation, coding, applying analytical framework (conceptual model), charting, interpretation.

Selection of allergen extract for immunotherapy in polysensitized allergic rhinitis patients.

To evaluate the criteria used by allergists in selecting an immunotherapy extract (allergen immunotherapy [AIT]-extract) in rhinitis patients with polysensitization. First, a cross-sectional study was carried out by evaluating different factors that influence the medical choice of AIT-extract. Second, a literature review was performed by evaluating the diagnostic performance of atopy tests.

Stimulus-related oscillatory brain activity discriminates hoarding disorder from OCD and healthy controls.

Hoarding disorder (HD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are highly comorbid and genetically related, but their similarities and differences at the neural level are not well characterized. The present study examined the time-frequency information contained in stimulus-related EEG data as participants worked on a visual flanker task. Three groups were included: participants diagnosed with HD (N = 33), OCD (N = 26), and healthy controls (N = 35).

Bis-sulfonamido-2-phenylbenzoxazoles Validate the GroES/EL Chaperone System as a Viable Antibiotic Target.

We recently reported on small-molecule inhibitors of the GroES/GroEL chaperone system as potential antibiotics against and the ESKAPE pathogens but were unable to establish GroES/GroEL as the cellular target, leading to cell death. In this study, using two of our most potent -sulfonamido-2-phenylbenzoxazoles (PBZs), we established the binding site of the PBZ molecules using cryo-EM and found that GroEL was the cellular target responsible for the mode of action. Cryo-EM revealed that PBZ1587 binds at the GroEL ring-ring interface (RRI).

Peer Education as a Tool to Improve Health Knowledge for People Who Are Incarcerated: A Secondary Analysis of Data From the Indiana Peer Education Program ECHO.

Considerable health inequities occur among people who are incarcerated, with ripple effects into broader community health. The Indiana Peer Education Program uses the Extension for Community Health Outcomes (ECHO) model to train people who are incarcerated as peer health educators. This analysis sought to evaluate the effectiveness of this program and explore emergent themes not covered in survey instruments.

Online Mixed-Bed Ion Exchange Chromatography for Native Top-Down Proteomics of Complex Mixtures.

Native top-down mass spectrometry (nTDMS) allows characterization of protein structure and noncovalent interactions with simultaneous sequence mapping and proteoform characterization. The majority of nTDMS studies utilize purified recombinant proteins, with significant challenges hindering application to endogenous systems. To perform native top-down proteomics (nTDP), where endogenous proteins from complex biological systems are analyzed by nTDMS, it is essential to separate proteins under nondenaturing conditions.

Microplastics in human blood: Polymer types, concentrations and characterisation using μFTIR.

Microplastics (MPs) are an everyday part of life, and are now ubiquitous in the environment. Crucially, MPs have not just been found within the environment, but also within human bodies, including the blood. We aimed to provide novel information on the range of MP polymer types present, as well as their size and shape characteristics, in human whole blood from 20 healthy volunteers.

Label-free detection and profiling of individual solution-phase molecules.

Most chemistry and biology occurs in solution, in which conformational dynamics and complexation underlie behaviour and function. Single-molecule techniques are uniquely suited to resolving molecular diversity and new label-free approaches are reshaping the power of single-molecule measurements. A label-free single-molecule method capable of revealing details of molecular conformation in solution would allow a new microscopic perspective of unprecedented detail.
