Purpose: To assess the rate of heterotopic ossification (HO) following acetabular surgery with a standardized protocol via the Kocher-Langenbeck. Secondarily, to evaluate patient characteristics, injury variables, and perioperative data among patients with HO and no HO.
Methods: This was a retrospective case series from an academic Level I trauma center.
Aim: To characterize the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) and explore their proteomic cargo in healthy pregnant women compared to those with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and periodontitis.
Methods: One-hundred and four pregnant women were recruited at 24-30 gestation weeks. GDM was diagnosed by an oral glucose tolerance test.
Aim: Epigenetic regulation of the key inflammatory genes plays a crucial role in controlling monocyte/macrophage-mediated local and systemic responses to bacterial challenges. However, it has not been addressed in apical periodontitis (AP). We aimed to explore the methylation pattern of the TNF-α gene promoter and its association with the inflammatory phenotype of peripheral blood monocytes from individuals with AP and controls.

Follicular development can culminate with the rupture of mature follicles and the consequent expulsion of their oocytes (ovulation) or in atresia, characterized by the arrest of development and eventual degeneration. These processes are regulated by different neuroendocrine signals arising at different hypothalamic nuclei, including the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN).

They have become an ubiquitous tool in many medical settings due to being easily accessible and perceived as easy to design and implement. However, there is a lack of understanding for when to use checklists and how to design them, leading to substandard use and suboptimal effectiveness of this intervention in medical settings.

Arterial hypertension is the result of an inflammatory process that results in the remodeling and thickening of the vascular walls, which is associated with an immunological response. Previous studies have attempted to demonstrate the relationship between oral disease, inflammation, and the development of systemic diseases.

Design: Retrospective comparative study.
Setting: Level 1 trauma center.
Peri-implantitis is a serious condition affecting dental implants that can lead to implant failure and loss of osteointegration if is not diagnosed and treated promptly. Therefore, the development of new materials and approaches to treat this condition is of great interest. In this study, we aimed to develop an electrospun scaffold composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) microfibers loaded with cholecalciferol (Col), which has been shown to promote bone tissue regeneration.

Materials And Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on pregnant women between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. Sociodemographic, clinical, obstetric, and periodontal variables were studied.
Background: Pregnancy exacerbates the periodontal inflammation; however, the biological mediators involved are not well characterized. Neuropilins (NRPs) are transmembrane glycoproteins involved in physiological and pathogenic processes such as angiogenesis and immunity but its relationship with periodontal disease in pregnant women has not been studied.
Objective: To explore the soluble Neuropilin-1 (sNRP-1) levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples during early pregnancy and its association with the periodontitis severity and periodontal clinical parameters.
Background: In Argentina, Hemolytic uremic syndrome caused by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC HUS), is the main cause of acute kidney injury and the second cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in children. In recent decades, strategies have been implemented to reduce progression to ESRD, but it is not known whether the cumulative incidence of HUS requiring kidney transplantation (KTx) has decreased. We aimed to determine whether the cumulative incidence of STEC HUS in children undergoing KTx decreased and compared outcomes of HUS-related KTx vs.

Background: The rapidly widespread SARS-CoV-2 infection has affected millions worldwide, thus becoming a global health emergency. Although vaccines are already available, there are still new COVID-19 cases daily worldwide, mainly due to low immunization coverage and the advent of new strains. Therefore, there is an utmost need for the discovery of lead compounds to treat COVID-19.

This study shows vagus nerve plays a role in the multisynaptic pathways of communication between the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the ovaries where such neural information determines ovulation.
Abstract: The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) regulates the activity of several peripheral organs through a parasympathetic-sympathetic pathway.
Hypoxia associated with inflammation are common hallmarks observed in several diseases, and it plays a major role in the expression of non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs (miRNAs). In addition, the miRNA target genes for hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and nuclear factor of activated T cells-5 (NFAT5) modulate the adaptation to hypoxia. The objective of the present study was to explore hypoxia-related miRNA target genes for HIF-1α and NFAT5, as well as miRNA-20a, miRNA-30e, and miRNA-93 expression in periodontitis versus healthy gingival tissues and gingival mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs) cultured under hypoxic conditions.

Methods: Participants with at least one dental implant with healthy peri-implant tissues, peri-implant mucositis, or peri-implantitis were included. PICF was collected using paper strips from healthy and diseased peri-implant sites ( = 19).
Currently, researchers are focused on the study of cytokines as predictive biomarkers of peri-implantitis (PI) in order to obtain an early diagnosis and prognosis, and for treatment of the disease. The aim of the study was to characterize the peri-implant soft and hard tissues in patients with a peri-implantitis diagnosis. A descriptive observational study was conducted.

Background: Handoffs occur frequently in the medical domain and are associated with up to 80% of medical errors. Although research has progressed, handoffs largely remain inadequate. The absence of an appropriate conceptual model for handoffs hinders the purposeful design and evaluation of handoff procedures.

Whether mitochondrial dysfunction is present during HFpEF decompensation versus the stable phase is largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to identify mitochondrial and cell metabolism blood biomarkers in older patients with acute and stable HFpEF.

However, it is not clear how stimulus factors, such as the contrast of the scene, affect the cost. The current study reports the results of two studies that address this question.

HAMPs are wound response amplifiers; however, specific defense outputs may also exist that strictly require HAMP-mediated defense signaling. To investigate HAMP-mediated signaling and defense responses, we characterized cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) transcriptome changes following elicitation by inceptin, a peptide HAMP common in Lepidoptera larvae oral secretions.
