Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) became a globally dominant crop after incorporating the D genome from the donor species Aegilops tauschii, but the evolutionary history that shaped the D genome during this process remains to be clarified. Here, we propose a renewed evolutionary model linking Ae. tauschii and the hexaploid wheat D genome by constructing an ancestral haplotype map covering 762 Ae.

As important secondary metabolites in plants, anthocyanins not only contribute to colored plants organs, but also provide protections against various biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, a MYB transcription factor gene TdRCA1 from wild emmer wheat regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis in wheat coleoptile was identified on the short arm of chromosome 7A in common wheat genetic background. The TdRCA1 overexpression lines showed colored callus, coleoptile, auricle and stem nodes, as well as up regulation of six anthocyanin-related structural genes.

The common wheat line 4N0461 showed adult-plant resistance to leaf rust. 4N0461 was crossed with susceptible cultivars Nongda4503 and Shi4185 to map the causal resistance gene(s). Segregation of leaf rust response in F populations from both crosses was 9 resistant:7 susceptible, indicative of two complementary dominant resistance genes.

Plants form two immune systems, pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP)-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI), to combat Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt) infection during the evolutionary process.

Grain albumin is highly nutritious and closely related to the processing quality of wheat. However, few studies have explored the grain albumin content (GAC) in wheat. This study aims to uncover quantitative trait loci (QTLs) linked to wheat GAC by analyzing a doubled haploid (DH) population derived from common wheat cultivars ShanNong23 and ZhouMai17.

Background: The massive structural variations and frequent introgression highly contribute to the genetic diversity of wheat, while the huge and complex genome of polyploid wheat hinders efficient genotyping of abundant varieties towards accurate identification, management, and exploitation of germplasm resources.

Results: We develop a novel workflow that identifies 1240 high-quality large copy number variation blocks (CNVb) in wheat at the pan-genome level, demonstrating that CNVb can serve as an ideal DNA fingerprinting marker for discriminating massive varieties, with the accuracy validated by PCR assay. We then construct a digitalized genotyping CNVb map across 1599 global wheat accessions.

Wheat powdery mildew is an important fungal disease that seriously jeopardizes wheat production, which poses a serious threat to food safety. SJ106 is a high-quality, disease-resistant spring wheat variety; this disease resistance is derived from Wheat-wheatgrass 33. In this study, the powdery mildew resistance genes in SJ106 were located at the end of chromosome 6DS, a new disease resistance locus tentatively named .

The separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs is crucial for the construction of high-performance and wide-band responsive photodetectors. The type-I heterojunction as a photodetector is seldomly studied due to its limited separation of the carriers and narrow optical response. In this work, we demonstrated that the high performance of type-I heterojunction as a broadband photodetector can be obtained by rational design of the band alignment and proper modulation from external electric field.

Cold injury is a major environmental stress affecting the growth and yield of crops. Brassinosteroids (BRs) and salicylic acid (SA) play important roles in plant cold tolerance. However, whether or how BR signaling interacts with the SA signaling pathway in response to cold stress is still unknown.

A novel QTL on chromosome 2A for Fusarium crown rot resistance was identified and validated in wheat. Fusarium crown rot (FCR) is a fungal disease that causes significant yield losses in many cereal growing regions in the world. In this study, genetic analysis was conducted for a wheat EMS mutant C549 which showed stable resistance to FCR at seedling stage.

A locus conferring Fusarium crown rot resistance was identified on chromosome arm 3DL through genome wide association study and further validated in two recombinant inbred lines populations. Fusarium crown rot (FCR) is a severe soil borne disease in many wheat growing regions of the world. In this study, we attempted to detect loci conferring FCR resistance through a new seedling inoculation assay.

Intracellular gene transfers (IGTs) between the nucleus and organelles, including plastids and mitochondria, constantly reshape the nuclear genome during evolution. Despite the substantial contribution of IGTs to genome variation, the dynamic trajectories of IGTs at the pangenomic level remain elusive. Here, we developed an approach, IGTminer, that maps the evolutionary trajectories of IGTs using collinearity and gene reannotation across multiple genome assemblies.

Plants have evolved a two-branched innate immune system to detect and cope with pathogen attack, which are initiated by cell-surface and intracellular immune receptors leading to pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI), respectively. A core transducer including PAD4-EDS1 node is proposed as the convergence point for a two-tiered immune system in conferring pathogen immunity. However, the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms controlling expression of these key transducers remain largely unknown.

Major crops are all survivors of domestication bottlenecks. Studies have focused on the genetic loci related to the domestication syndrome, while the contribution of ancient haplotypes remains largely unknown. Here, an ancestral genomic haploblock dissection method is developed and applied to a resequencing dataset of 386 tetraploid/hexaploid wheat accessions, generating a pan-ancestry haploblock map.

Fusarium crown rot (FCR), caused by species, is a serious soilborne fungal disease in many wheat growing regions in the world. A reliable FCR assessment method is essential for germplasm screening and host resistance studies. Here, we report a new assay in which we inoculated wheat seedlings grown in a glasshouse for FCR by injecting spore suspensions into the seedling stems.

Article Synopsis
  • Powdery mildew, caused by a specific fungus, poses a significant threat to wheat yields globally, necessitating the need for disease resistance in wheat crops.
  • This study utilized durum wheat as a bridge to transfer powdery mildew resistance genes from diploid wild wheat into hexaploid cultivated wheat through a series of crossings and backcrossing methods.
  • Eight recombinant types were identified, and two resistant introgression lines were selected for their high self-fertility, which can enhance wheat breeding programs using molecular markers for tracking resistance traits.
