Background: Trust is a foundation of the therapeutic relationship and is associated with important patient outcomes. Building trust between parents of children with medical complexity (CMC) and physicians during inpatient care is complicated by lack of relational continuity, cumulative (sometimes negative) parent experiences and the need to adjust roles and expectations to accommodate parental expertise. This study's objective was to describe how parents of CMC conceptualize trust with physicians within the pediatric inpatient setting and to provide recommendations for building trust in these relationships.

Purpose: To understand contemporary experiences of pediatric health care professionals' (HCPs) caring for hospitalized Medically Fragile Infants (MFI) and their parents.

Design And Methods: Convenience sampling was adopted to recruit 26 HCPs who provided care to MFI and their parents on inpatient units at a large tertiary pediatric hospital in Western Canada. Participants participated in either a focus group or individual face-to-face interview.

Objectives: The communication experience and therapeutic relationships between parents and health care providers (HCPs) impacts the quality of patient care. A guiding "communication crisis" description was created to encourage study participants to describe difficult communication encounters between parents and HCPs where their perspectives regarding the recommended patient care conflicted (ie, parent refusal of a lumbar puncture), which created barriers to the provision of optimal care and the development of therapeutic relationships in the pediatric hospital setting. The purpose of this research was to highlight factors that may contribute to communication crises through the characterization of these circumstances.

This pilot study evaluated the effects of an educational workshop on nurses' (N=36) attitudes and beliefs toward family-centered bedside rounds (FBR) using a single group, pretest/posttest design on two pediatric inpatient units at an academic tertiary-care center in Western Canada. The theory of planned behavior was used to develop the Nurses Attitudes and Behaviors about Rounds (NABAR) questionnaire. There were statistically significant increases between pretest and posttest scores on nurses' intentions, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control related to FBR, and on providing education to families about FBR.

Although maternal screening and the administration of prophylactic intrapartum antibiotics have decreased the incidence of early onset group B streptococcal (GBS) disease in neonates, there is still significant morbidity and mortality as a result of neonatal GBS disease.Maternal GBS infections are not uncommon, but with appropriate therapy there is almost a uniformly good outcome. Little is written about the appropriate management of well infants born to mothers with postpartum GBS sepsis.
