We examined the effects of ultrasound (U), Fenton oxidation (F), and ultrasound coupled with Fenton oxidation (U + F) pre-treatments (prior to anaerobic digestion) on the elimination of odorous compounds. The results demonstrated that U promoted odor release, while the coupled treatment and F alone decreased odor release. After 20-min treatments, the concentration of dissolved sulfide (S(2-)) under the coupled U + F treatment declined from 17.

In this study, acidogenic liquid from food waste was used as an alternative carbon source for synthetic wastewater treatment. Fenton oxidation was compared with Fenton oxidation coupled with ultrasonication (Fenton + US) for sludge dewatering. Different Fenton reagent (H2O2, Fe(2+)) concentrations, pH, and reaction times were studied in different systems on the basis of the specific resistance to filtration (SRF) and capillary suction time (CST). It was found that Fenton + US can significantly reduce Fe(2+) and H2O2 dosages and reaction times.

The results suggest that ultrasound treatment can significantly increase COD [chemical oxygen demand], proteins and reducing sugars, but decrease that of lipids in food waste supernatant. Ultrasound pre-treatment boosted the production of VFAs dramatically during the fermentation of food waste.
