Background: We conducted a large international study to estimate fractions of head and neck cancers (HNCs) attributable to human papillomavirus (HPV-AFs) using six HPV-related biomarkers of viral detection, transcription, and cellular transformation.

Methods: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded cancer tissues of the oral cavity (OC), pharynx, and larynx were collected from pathology archives in 29 countries. All samples were subject to histopathological evaluation, DNA quality control, and HPV-DNA detection.

Background: The objective of this study was to investigate the expression of human papilloma virus (HPV) L1 capsid protein in abnormal cervical cytology with HPV16 infection and analyze its association with cervical histopathology in Korean women.

Material And Methods: We performed immunocytochemistry for HPV L1 in 475 abnormal cervical cytology samples from patients with HPV16 infections using the Cytoactiv(®) HPV L1 screening set. We investigated the expression of HPV L1 in cervical cytology samples and compared it with the results of histopathological examination of surgical specimens.

Purpose: Non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) comprises 75-85% of all lung cancers, and approximately 25% of all NSCLC patients develop brain metastasis. There are no reliable markers for predicting in which patients this metastasis will occur. DCUN1D1, also known as squamous cell carcinoma-related oncogene, is associated with tumor progression and poor outcomes in NSCLC.

Article Synopsis
  • BRAF mutations are common in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), with 80.6% of 1041 Korean patients studied showing mutations, varying by histologic subtype.* -
  • The prevalence of BRAF mutations was highest in classic (85.3%) and microcarcinoma (79.9%) subtypes, while only 45.8% were found in follicular subtypes.* -
  • The study identified four mutation types, including three novel ones, and noted that the mutation rate is lower in follicular morphology PTCs, suggesting the need for tailored clinical management based on these mutations.*

Background And Objectives: The calcium-binding protein S100A4 promotes tumor progression and metastasis. We investigated the expression of S100A4 in colorectal cancer and its clinicopathologic significance in colorectal cancer.

Methods: A total of 526 colorectal cancer patients were examined for S100A4 protein by immunohistochemistry using tissue microarrays.

The American Joint Committee on Cancer has proposed the tumor, node, metastasis (TNM) staging system to overcome the limitations of the Ann Arbor staging system for ocular adnexal lymphoma. We performed this study to evaluate the feasibility of the TNM staging system for ocular adnexal extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (OAML). The data form 66 total eyes from 54 patients with biopsy-confirmed OAML according to World Health Organization classification were retrospectively analyzed.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is an extremely rare malignancy derived from antigen-presenting cells, with 55 cases reported thus far. A standard treatment modality is still being debated. This report describes a 56-year-old female who presented with right tonsillar enlargement and right submandibular swelling for 6 months.

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is widely used in diagnostic practice and research, but it is limited due to its subjective nature and weakness in reproducibility. For successful interpretation, IHC requires an internal reference system that controls for procedural variables and provides a staining intensity reference. We investigated the feasibility of using mouse spleen tissue as an intensity reference in conventional IHC.

Background: Atrophic gastritis is a well known risk factor for gastric adenocarcinoma. Its confirmatory diagnosis requires histology via endoscopy, which is an invasive method; therefore, periodic follow up evaluation as a screening method is difficult to perform. We evaluated the clinical utility of serum pepsinogens (PG) as a biomarker for screening of atrophic gastritis.

Patients with neurofibromatosis-1 (NF-1) have increased susceptibility to a variety of malignancies. Here, we document a rare case of two separated ileal adenocarcinomas in NF-1. The adenocarcinomas were surrounded by a diffuse tubular adenomatous lesion of the mucosa, and ganglion cells were scattered in the NF background.

Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is recognized as the most common form of primary glomerulonephritis worldwide. It is characterized by mesangial cell proliferation with mesangial IgA deposition in the glomeruli, and is usually associated with secondary tubulointerstitial injury. Although significant progress has been made in the clarification of the pathogenesis of IgAN, the exact pathogenetic mechanism remains unclear.

Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common form of immune complex-mediated glomerulonephritis worldwide. Although chronic renal failure develops in considerable numbers of IgAN patients, the exact etiology has not yet been clearly elucidated. To establish the urinary protein map of IgAN, we performed a urinary proteomic analysis.

Purpose: Pregnancy and hCG treatments are considered essential for inhibiting breast cancer. The effect of hCG is accompanied by the synthesis of inhibin, a transforming growth factor involved in cell differentiation and proliferation. Inhibin is considered a tumor suppressor, but its role in the breast is unclear.

Hyalinizing spindle cell tumor with giant rosettes (HSCTGR) is a recently described tumor, which is regarded as an unusual variant of low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma. Proof of a metastatic potential was lacking. The patient in the report was a 35-yr-old woman who showed multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules with massive pleural effusion in the right side.

Determining of HER-2/neu oncogene amplification has become clinically important for managing breast cancer. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) are currently regarded as the standard methods. Chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) was investigated as a new modification with an accurate, sensitive technique.

The new BDProbeTec ET System (BDET; BD Biosciences, Sparks, MD) was compared with the Roche COBAS AMPLICOR System (CAS) and culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). A total of 253 specimens (152 respiratory and 101 pleural fluid specimens) collected from 240 patients were tested in parallel with the 3 assays. After resolving the discrepancies, the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the BDET for detecting MTB was 76.

The katG, inhA and ahpC genes, in 71 isoniazid (INH)-resistant and 26 INH-susceptible Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates, from South Korea were examined by sequencing and MspI restriction enzyme analysis. Mutations in the katG 315 alone, katG 315 plus inhA, katG 315 plus ahpC, katG 309 alone, katG 309 plus inhA, inhA alone, and ahpC alone, were detected in 54.9, 2.

Background: A new flow cytometric monocyte phagocytic assay (FMPA) was developed with 5-chloromethyl fluorescein diacetate (CMFDA)-labeled platelets for predicting the outcome of platelet transfusion.

Study Design And Methods: Twelve patients with a history of multiple platelet transfusions and 21 controls were enrolled in this study. Platelets labeled with CMFDA were incubated with patient serum and then incubated with monocytes.
