The study evaluates the outcomes of esophagectomy combined with extended 2-field lymph node dissection in 1,690 patients with esophageal cancer from 1987 to 2008.
Lymph node metastasis was observed in 42.2% of patients, with significant rates in both thoracic and abdominal areas, while postoperative complications occurred in 16.4% of cases, primarily pulmonary issues.
Survival rates were reported at 88.2% for one year, decreasing to 30.8% by ten years, with a notable disparity between patients with and without lymph node metastasis in terms of survival.
