Background: Open Bankart repair provides surgeons and patients with an alternative solution for managing recurrent instability in young athletes with or without minimal bone loss. Despite many studies that have reported low recurrence rates and good functional outcomes after open Bankart repair, we have limited knowledge about the return to sport and work for high-demand populations.
Purpose: To assess the return to sport and work for high-demand populations after open Bankart repair for recurrent anterior shoulder instability, outcomes of open Bankart repair with regard to recurrence, and development of osteoarthritic (OA) changes.
Background: Arthroscopic superior capsular reconstruction (ASCR) is a method for treating irreparable chronic rotator cuff tears. However, the extent to which ASCR can be performed with regard to the patient's age has yet to be determined.
Purpose: To compare the surgical outcomes of ASCR for the treatment of irreparable rotator cuff tears (IRCTs) in patients aged <65 years versus patients aged ≥65 years.
Several articles have described arthroscopic fixation of coronal shear fractures of the distal humerus. However, not all of them have used purely arthroscopic techniques. In this Technical Note we describe another technique for intra-articular distal humeral fracture fixation using arthroscopy alone.

The aim of this study is to validate previously known clinicopathologic features of intraductal papillary neoplasm of bile duct (IPNB) based on the first largest multicenter cohort.
Methods: Among 587 patients previously diagnosed with IPNB and similar diseases from each center in Korea, 387 were included in this study after central pathologic review.

Secretory carcinoma of the salivary gland (SC) is a newly introduced rare salivary gland tumor that shares histological, immunohistochemical, and genetic characteristics with secretory carcinoma of the breast. Here, we report the cytologic features of two cases of SC confirmed by surgical resection. In these two cases, SC was incidentally detected in a 64-year-old female and a 56-yearold male.

Use of a glucose-based medium for heterotrophic growth is needed to achieve a high growth rate and production of abundant lipids. However, heat sterilization for reliable cultivation is not appropriate to heat-sensitive materials and causes a conversion of glucose via browning (Maillard) reactions.

Subjects/methods: Our case-control study included 113 pairs of case and control who underwent colonoscopy and provided blood samples.
Background: The purpose of this study is to report the outcome of navigation-assisted cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using one type of cemented, second-generation, floating-platform (FP), mobile-bearing system.
Methods: Forty-two patients who underwent cruciate retaining TKAs using e.motion-FP prostheses under navigational guidance were retrospectively reviewed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report the clinical course of fatigue-type subchondral fractures of the femoral head in young healthy adults.
Materials/methods: We retrospectively reviewed 28 consecutive patients (34 hips) who had a clear history of a sudden increase in physical activity without trauma on the hip and pelvis, and were diagnosed as having a fatigue-type subchondral fracture of the femoral head. The diagnosis was made primarily on the basis of sequential plain radiographs and magnetic resonance images.
Follicular variant papillary thyroid cancer (FVPTC) is the second most common subtype after conventional PTC. We compared ultrasonographic (US) features of FVPTC to those of conventional PTC according to tumor size. We reviewed US findings, pathologic reports, and medical charts of 249 PTC patients with surgically proven disease (83 FVPTCs, 166 conventional PTCs) at our institution from January 2007 to December 2012.

The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is understood as a process of tumor invasion and metastasis. Therefore, we investigated the relation between the EMT and the microenvironment of colorectal carcinoma (CRC).

Methods: We conducted a matched case-control study (112 cases and 112 matched controls) and combined 15 studies, including our study, in a meta-analysis. The study-specific odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled using a random-effects model.
Background: Colorectal cancer in Korea has become more prevalent over the few last decades, and calcium is considered a preventive factor for colorectal cancer development. We examined the associations between total and dietary calcium intake and the prevalence of colorectal adenoma in Korean adults.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 112 colorectal adenoma cases and 252 adenoma-free non-cases, aged 45 to 71 years, who underwent colonoscopies at the Daegu Catholic University Medical Center from August 2011 to September 2012.

Neuroendocrine lesions of the thyroid are rare. The most common types are medullary thyroid carcinomas (MTCs) and C-cell hyperplasia. MTCs originate from thyroid parafollicular cells that secrete calcitonin which serves as a serum marker of MTCs.

Materials And Methods: From April 2011 to May 2012, we performed 87 cementless HAs for displaced femoral neck fractures in elderly patients (≥65 years) with severe osteoporosis. Among them, we studied 70 hips that were able to be followed-up for >24 months.
Background: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in Korea. Because colorectal adenoma is a precursor lesion of colorectal cancer, primary prevention of colorectal adenomas may be important for reducing morbidity and mortality from the disease. The aim of this study is to examine the association of alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking in relation with colorectal adenoma in a cross-sectional study of Korean adults.

The aim of study is to clarify risk factors for LNM and to determine therapeutic strategy after endoscopic resection in patients with ECC.
Methodology: The histopathology of patients with ECC underwent surgery with LN dissection in 8 university hospitals were reviewed by experienced pathologist blinded to LN status.
Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) has various histological patterns and the immunologic characteristics differ between eastern and western patients. This study assessed the histological pattern of Korean NPs and determined whether Korean NP patterns have become westernized.
Methods: Three hundred forty-nine CRSwNP patients were enrolled in this study in 2001 (n = 107), 2006 (n = 111), and 2011 (n = 131).
Hyperinsulinemia may increase the risk of colorectal neoplasia because of its mitogenic and antiapoptotic properties, which have a growth-promoting effect. We examined the association between circulating concentrations of C-peptide, a biomarker of insulin secretion, and colorectal adenoma prevalence in a case-control study of Korean adults. A total of 364 participants (112 cases and 252 controls) were included.

While the pivotal role of fibroblasts in renal fibrosis is widely accepted, their origin remains undefined. In addition, although a large number of studies have provided evidence of EMT in human kidney diseases, specific signaling pathways leading to EMT have not yet been discovered in humans.
